🍑 Common Causes of “Pain in the Butt”

1. Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Pain 🔹 Pain from the joint connecting your spine to your pelvis. 🔹 We often call it the “great imitator” as it can present as lower back pain or even as pain going down the leg!

2. Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome 🔹 Pain on the outside (aka lateral side) of your buttock or hip region. 🔹 Typically worse when lying on your side or climbing stairs. 🔹 Caused by irritation near the greater trochanter (the bony bump on your hip).

3. Hamstring Tendinopathy / Ischial Bursitis 🔹 Keep in mind these are two separate things but can have overlapping symptoms! 🔹 Deep buttock pain located near the “sit bone.” 🔹 Aggravated by sitting or quick acceleration movements. 🔹 Can be seen in runners or athletes with overuse injuries.

4. Piriformis Syndrome (Controversial) 🔹 The piriformis muscle can compress or irritate the sciatic nerve. 🔹 May cause shooting, radiating pain down the leg (sometimes referred to as “pseudo-sciatica”). 🔹 Rare and frequently overdiagnosed.

5. Cluneal Neuralgia (Rare) 🔹 Irritation of small nerves along the upper buttock and iliac crest. 🔹 Leads to localized tenderness or burning pain over the upper gluteal area.

⚡️ What are the symptoms of sciatica? ⚡️

👁️Here are 5 to look out for:

1️⃣ Radiating pain – starts in the lower back or buttock, travels down the thigh, sometimes into the calf or foot. 2️⃣ Unilateral – *usually* one leg, not both. 3️⃣ Sharp, shooting, or electric-like pain – some describe it as burning, jolting, or stabbing. 4️⃣ Worsens with movement – coughing, sneezing, or bending forward can intensify it. 5️⃣ Associated symptoms – numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg or foot.

👋 Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Andre Martin, PTA, the newest member of our Peachtree Spine Physical Therapy team! Andre earned his undergraduate degree from Georgia Southern University in 2015 and went on to receive his Associate’s Degree as a Physical Therapist Assistant in 2023. With experience treating patients from ages 3 to 93 in the outpatient setting, Andre is passionate about helping individuals improve their function and quality of life. When he’s not in the clinic, you’ll find him playing flag football, singing or listening to music, and even doing background work in films! He also enjoys spending time with his family, friends, and his beloved cat, Biscuit. We’re excited to have Andre on board—welcome to the team!
