Better late than never, we couldn't let today go by without celebrating the kick off to World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) 2025 and International board-certified appreciation day.
In honor of these events, we want to recognize our fearless leader
Sharon has spent countless hours feeding her own babies, volunteering to help other mothers feed their babies, and even after she started her private practice, not a woman has called who didn't hang up the phone without some kind of lactation/breastfeeding/parenting advice. Not only is she the lactation 'guru of Atlanta'
for local families; she is also the 'local guru' for mentorship by also dedicating much of her practice time and space to those of us who come behind her and need her leadership and guidance in growing our own path to lactation care.

So today, we honor and celebrate Sharon, for her patience, her understanding, her gentle guiding touch, what she has brought to the local families needing feeding help for their infants and what she has brought to the younger generation of lactation consultants who needs/needed to be shown what it is all about.

Thank you Sharon from your staff and mentees' at LCA. We appreciate your dedication and can only hope to be a tenth of the lactation consultant you are, one day. Happy World Breastfeeding Week and Happy IBCLC Appreciation Day!

To continue the celebrations, we want to know....are you breastfeeding? Pumping? How long? Are you in lactation or the birthing care work?Did you see a lactation consultant? Was it helpful? Share your stories so we can celebrate you!

Are you up breastfeeding or pumping tonight? We see you. We want you to know that you are not alone. There are many parents just like you that are awake feeding their babies too.

It is normal for babies to wake up at night to be fed. Breastmilk is metabolized quickly, and breastfed babies should be eating every 2-3 hours. Our hormones (Prolactin) that make breastmilk are higher in the early morning hours. This means that our bodies are meant to wake up to breastfeed or pump during that time.

Helpful Tip- Milk removal during the night can help prevent engorgement.

If you are having trouble with nighttime feeding, engorgement and/or have questions, please reach out to us. An IBCLC (International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant) can customize a plan to help you and your baby.

What is engorgement?
Engorgement is when the breast is full of milk and can be painful to breastfeed or pump.

What causes engorgement?
When the breasts are producing more milk than the infant can intake.

How can you relieve engorgement?
Relieving engorgement can be done by using different methods.
-Breast compressions while feeding the baby can be effective.
-Expressing milk in between feeding can help relieve engorgement.
-Breast massages and hand expressions will help relieve the symptoms.
-Cold compressions applied between feedings can help relieve the pain with engorgement.
-Lying flat on your back can also relieve the pain with engorgement.
-Cabbage leaves in your bra can bring down inflammation with engorgement.

If you cannot relieve the symptoms of engorgement talk with an IBCLC for further information and help.

What is tandem feeding?
This is when a mother decides to continue breastfeeding an older sibling while also feeding a newborn baby. Children who have been tandem nursed often continue to have a special bond throughout life, and mothers report that tandem nursing can help to ease the transition of having a new baby in the family. Continuing to breastfeed your toddler through the stressful and highly emotional experience of gaining a sibling can help to make the transition smoother for your toddler. The nutrition and immunological properties of breastmilk continue to be valuable, and they can help your toddler through any illness. Nursing your older child once the new baby arrives can ease engorgement when your milk becomes plentiful and helps protect milk production if your newborn baby is not feeding effectively. This is also beneficial when establishing the bond between you and your child, and between siblings.
If you need help with feeding your older baby while feeding a new baby, please reach out to an IBCLC. We would be happy to help you travel this new journey.

If you are pumping at work, here are some tips that you may find helpful:
1. Have a pump that travels well and is comfortable for you
2. Be familiar with the lactation/pumping room at your workplace
3. Have a back-up plan for storing your milk if there is not a sanitary refrigerator available (A small lunchbox with ice packs work well)
4. Pump at least every 3 hours for 15 minutes on each side.
5. Know that you have a right to pump for your child while at work according to Charlotte’s Law!
If you have any questions or concerns, we are here to help. If you are returning to work soon, call us to schedule a return to work consult so we can customize a plan for you.

We usually would tell moms to power pump while watching TV and use the commercial breaks to gauge her time. With today’s streaming services it is hard to tell moms to pump while the commercial is on. Do we even sit through commercials now a days? So how about we NETFLIX and PUMP.
Choose your Favorite 1 hour show
Pump for 20 minutes
Rest for 10 minutes
Pump for 10 minutes
Rest for 10 minutes
Pump for 10 minutes

Power Pumping encourages milk let down and it is one tool of many to boost your supply. Remember you are not pumping for 1 hour straight but taking breaks in between. Do not sacrifice a nursing session for a power pumping session. Don’t be discouraged but celebrate every drop.
