This month we’re proud to recognize our August Staff Member of the Month, Cathy, our concierge at the Coleman Center! Cathy was nominated for her dedication to Fleet Landing and the way she steps up with flexibility, positivity, and a genuine smile every day. From picking up extra shifts to helping train interim staff, she goes above and beyond to make sure our Residents and team feel supported. Cathy truly lives out Fleet Landing’s values, and we’re grateful for the warmth and care she brings to our community.

Fleet Landing is improving the health of our lake by adding floating BioHavens, artificial wetlands that naturally clean the water while providing habitat for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife. This technology works like a natural wetland, cleaning the water and restoring balance to the lake’s ecosystem.

We are grateful to Resident Vickie Rose, who saw the potential for a cleaner lake and generously supported this restoration project. Thanks to her vision, our community will enjoy a healthier, more vibrant lake for years to come!

We received a triple dose of art education this week by visiting three diverse exhibits at the Cu**er Museum and MOCA Jax.

Fleet Landing Resident Lory Doolittle guided us though Knowing the West at the Cu**er. This is a travelling exhibition that challenges our perceptions of the American West, and presents a wide variety of artwork from from the 19th to early 20th centuries to add richness to what is often a romanticized view of the American West.

At MOCA Jax, we toured The Armory South: The 1924 Jacksonville Woman’s Club Exhibition Rediscovered, which reassembles core works from a forgotten but seminal Modernist exhibition mounted in March 1924 by the Woman’s Club of Jacksonville and the Jacksonville Fine Arts Society (now MOCA). We were impressed by the wide range of works from impressionism to modernism and cubism.

Jax Contemporary, a triennial art exhibition highlighting the artistic talent in the Greater Jacksonville and Northeast Florida region, gave us a new appreciation of the great artistic talent in our area. Six hundred works were submitted, and sixty-four were chosen for the exhibit, which included photography, painting, sculpture, collage, among other mediums.

Lunch at Bellwether after the show provided a relaxing opportunity to discuss the amazing art!

As part of Fleet Landing’s 35th anniversary year celebrations, the sensational big band Crescendo Amelia brought their “Dancing Through the Decades” program to our community. Residents had an absolute blast—twirling, grooving, and showing off outfits from their favorite decades. From swing to disco, the music was timeless and the fun was nonstop!

We were thrilled to welcome the Benny Benack Quartet for an unforgettable afternoon of world-class jazz! Emmy Award-winning trumpeter and crooner Benny Benack III travels the globe sharing his extraordinary talent—not only as a performer, but also as a passionate ambassador for jazz. His dedication to inspiring a new generation of jazz lovers is felt around the world, and we were honored to experience his artistry right here at Fleet Landing.

Congratulations to Oslyn, our July Staff Member of the Month! As Environmental Services Team Lead, Oslyn has been recognized for truly embodying Fleet Landing’s values: leading with compassion, teamwork, and a strong commitment to excellence. One nominator shared that she “goes above and beyond her job duties daily to ensure all Residents’ needs are met.” Whether she’s stepping in to help her team in housekeeping or laundry, Oslyn brings a great attitude and positive leadership to everything she does.

Fleet Landing’s Chef Spotlight Series in July featured the culinary creations of Currents Marketplace Chef de Cuisine, Adriana Farrell! Inspired by her family history and early life in Croatia and Alaska, Chef Adriana’s Tasting Menu included Scallop Ceviche, King Crab Caprese, Lamb Rack, Beef Cheek, and Cherry Strudel. It was a memorable evening filled with flavor, culture, and connection—a perfect tribute to Chef Adriana’s inspiring culinary journey.

As a part of an annual Fleet Landing tradition, 25 Residents joined us last week to help stuff more than 300 backpacks and school supply bags for the children of our staff members, as well as our staff still in high school. The time and effort put in by our Residents help make our back-to-school program a success, and this year was our biggest yet! Thank you to all of our participants for your support of our staff and their families.

There is never a dull moment at Fleet Landing! A Resident notified us that a large turtle was in her driveway. Security officers Andrew and Alec arrived on the scene ready for a rescue, but the turtle evaded them. In the end, Resident Ken DeVries grabbed a towel, picked up the turtle, and successfully place it back in the lake! Good job, Ken!

There's no better way to start a Friday than a walk on the beach with friends and neighbors! We had a dozen Residents turn out, including one who was taking his first beach walk with the group. The water was calm and beautiful, full of fishing boats, pelicans, and surfers.
