Great tips from one of our favorite IBCLC's! I'll also add that by having us on your team we assist and ensure baby is waking to eat and getting full! We also take ALL of the rest off your plate so you can just nurse and SLEEP!!!!
✨ Newborns are sleepy in those early days — sometimes too sleepy to eat! 👶
In the first week or so, your baby might not wake often enough to feed (they need to eat at least 8 times in 24 hours!). And even when they do start feeding, they might fall right back to sleep. 😴
Sometimes babies need a little extra encouragement to wake up and feed. Here are a few gentle tips to try 👇
🤱 Hold your baby skin-to-skin
👶 Undress them down to their diaper
💆 Give a gentle massage—try their hands, feet, or up and down their back
🔄 Change their position or try some light movement
🗣️ Talk to them in a soft, soothing voice
💡 Adjust the lights—brighter or dimmer, depending on what helps
🧷 Change their diaper
🧊 Try a cool (not cold!) washcloth on their back
⚠️ Important to Note: If your baby consistently sleeps through feedings, is hard to wake, or isn’t feeding well once awake, reach out to your healthcare provider.
