Did you know pharmacists can help you adjust your medication routine for daylight savings time?
Now that Daylight Saving Time has ended for the year, your body — and your medication routine — may need a little help adjusting. Earlier sunsets can affect your sleep, mood, and energy levels, so try to embrace natural light during the day or use a light therapy lamp if sunlight is limited. Give yourself time to ease into the new rhythm, eat more vitamin D-rich foods, and stay active to support your internal clock. And here’s something many people don’t realize: pharmacists can help you adjust your medication schedule safely. Timing matters for medications like insulin, thyroid treatments, and blood pressure pills — especially when your daily routine shifts. Stop by and let us help you feel your best this season.

Weekly Pharmacy Fact: First College of Pharmacy in US
The first college of pharmacy in the United States was founded in 1821 as the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and was the first institution in the United States dedicated solely to pharmaceutical education. It was established by a group of apothecaries who wanted to improve standards in the profession and ensure proper training for those preparing and dispensing medications.
This groundbreaking college laid the foundation for modern pharmacy education, emphasizing scientific rigor, ethical practice, and public health. It later became part of the University of the Sciences, which merged with Saint Joseph’s University in 2022.

Beware the haunted medicine cabinet: Tips for Cleaning out Expired Meds Safely.
Check Expiration Dates
o Medications lose potency over time and may even become unsafe.
o Look for discoloration, changes in smell, or crumbling tablets.
Don’t Flush or Toss in Trash
o Flushing can contaminate water systems.
o Throwing meds in the trash risks accidental exposure to children or pets.
Use Drug Take-Back Programs
o Safest option! Many pharmacies and law enforcement agencies offer secure drop-off locations.
o The DEA hosts National Prescription Drug Take Back Day twice a year.
If No Take-Back Is Available
o Mix meds (not in original container) with unappealing substances like coffee grounds or cat litter.
o Seal in a plastic bag and throw in household trash.
Remove Personal Info
o Scratch out names and prescription numbers before disposal to protect your privacy.

Hand Sanitizer vs. Soap: Which is better for preventing seasonal bugs?
When it comes to preventing seasonal illnesses like colds, flu, and stomach viruses, soap and water are the clear winners.
Why Soap Is Better:
o Soap physically removes germs from your skin by breaking down the sticky bonds that hold them in place. This means viruses and bacteria slide off your hands entirely.
o Hand sanitizer kills many germs, but it doesn’t remove dirt, grease, or certain pathogens like norovirus and Clostridium difficile.
o Cold-weather illnesses often spread via surface contact, and thorough handwashing is more effective at stopping transmission.
When to Use Hand Sanitizer:
o Use it only when soap and water aren’t available.
o Make sure it contains at least 60% alcohol for it to be effective.

Weekly Pharmacy Fact: Agatha Christie was a Pharmacy Technician
Agatha Christie, often called the “Queen of Crime,” is one of the best-selling authors of all time. Born in 1890 in England, she wrote 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, creating iconic characters like Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.
During World War I and II, Christie served as a volunteer nurse and later worked in a hospital dispensary, where she gained hands-on knowledge of medicines and poisons. This experience deeply influenced her writing—many of her plots hinge on clever uses of toxic substances and medical details. Her real-life expertise made her fictional crimes chillingly believable.

National Pharmacy Technician Day
Pharmacy technicians are the backbone of the pharmacy, keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes. They handle day-to-day operations like stocking shelves, preparing prescriptions, and assisting customers with care and precision. They also work closely with insurance companies to help ensure patients receive the medications they need—at a price they can afford. Without them, the pharmacy simply wouldn’t function.
