STOP! YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THAT...REALLY

Lice do not live in the environment.

Let me repeat that.

Lice do not live in the environment. This is great news for us!

I know many people have heard the "bag everything in your house for two weeks!" phrase. This is simply not true and just a waste of your time. A louse needs a host to survive. IF a louse was to fall off of the head, it will die within 24 hours. Lice do not want to fall off of your head. They will cling on for dear life during brushing, washing, blow drying and swimming. It is rare to find lice hanging out on a pillow case or stuffed animal.

I'm not saying it never happens, but it is rare. Lice cannot crawl fast nor can they jump or fly. If you find yourself with a head lice problem, remember the 24 hour rule.

Anything your head (or child's head) has been in contact with in the past 24 hours will need to be cleaned/washed. You can also set it aside for 24 hours. It really is that simple. No need to bag anything or tear your house apart and spray chemicals on everything. It's unnecessary and will only cause more stress.

Nits(lice eggs) cannot fall off of the head nor can they hatch off of the head. You cannot transfer nits or "catch" nits from anyone.

I hope this helps ease some stress surrounding lice ☺️

Lice eggs

Also known as, NITS

Nits are small tear drop shaped eggs that are glued to the hair shaft.

A common misconception is that nits are white or black specks. Nits are tan/brown in color when they have a nymph in them. They turn clear/tan once the nymph has hatched out of the shell. Some say they shine a "whitish silver" in the light, which may be where the misconception came about.

Nits are positioned on one side of the hair shaft and do not move if you flick or blow on them.

Nits have to be plucked or pinched off of the hair, hence the term "Nitpicking"

LICE MYTH: "You get head lice because you're dirty"

Lice is not a hygiene issue. They do not care if you wash your hair every day or if you choose to shower once a month! They will make a nice little home on anyone with a food supply(blood) and a place to live(your scalp and hair).

In fact, I tell my families in order to lessen your child's chance of a lice infestation, dirty up that hair! Mousse, hair gel, hair spray or any product that will add build up on the hair shaft and make it harder for the lice to lay their eggs.

If you find your child or yourself with lice, you are NOT dirty or lack hygiene skills.
