A total of 12 years of education is required to practice psychiatry in Michigan. So what exactly do those 12 years look like? Let's break it down!

4️⃣ years are spent obtaining your bachelor's degree (usually in psychology, biology or pre-med)

4️⃣ years are spent obtaining your Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine in Medical School

4️⃣ years are spent in residency

After spending 12 years of educating and learning, you must pass the exam to be Board Certified in Psychiatry and obtain proper licensing to practice in the state of Michigan.

So, trust that you are in good hands when you meet with a Psychiatrist. They have invested thousands of hours to ensure proper care is given to their patients.

Your mind and body are powerful allies. 🤝

An example of this mind-body connection is how your body responds to stress. Constant worry and stress over jobs, finances, or other problems can cause tense muscles, pain, headaches, and stomach problems.

On the other hand, constant pain or a health problem like heart disease can affect your emotions. You might become depressed, anxious, and stressed. This could affect how well you treat, manage, or cope with your illness.

Deep breathing, adding laughter to your life and exercising are all ways to reduce stress of the mind and the body. Take time on to listen to what your body needs most.

Did you know men are less likely than women to seek help for depression, substance abuse and stressful life events due to social norms, reluctance to talk and downplaying symptoms.

Things we need to normalize for men:
😔 Not being OK
🗣️ Speaking up
🗯️ Mental health issues
❓ Asking for help
😢 Showing emotions
❤️‍🩹 Going to therapy

Let's pretend your child comes home and has had a falling out with their friends at school. Your child might say “their whole social life is ruined, they are never going to have friends again and no one will ever like them”.

Pervasiveness looks at how much of your life a concern impacts
✨ Although your child had fallen out with their school friends they may still have other friendships elsewhere.

Permanence looks at how long an issue is going to be of concern
✨ By identifying previous times your child had successful conflict resolution, it makes the likelihood of your child making friends again seem more possible.

Personalization looks at how much you feel you are to blame
✨ Helping your child to understand what went wrong and what action they might take gives back a sense of control.

If you're dreading the holiday season the biggest thing you can do to protect your mental health is recognize your triggers and have a plan for when you are faced with one.

If someone is trying to draw you into a situation that you find stressful or upsetting, demure your way out of it. You can smile and say, “That’s a conversation for another time.” Or, you can excuse yourself and go for a short walk. You do not need to stay in a situation that is uncomfortable in order to be polite.

If you are in a good space mentally, you will be better able to spend time with those you care about.

You might be wondering, is there a genetic component to mental illness?

Yes, one's genetics can contribute to a mental health problem. Having a parent, sibling, or grandparent with mental illness increases a person's risk of developing the same symptoms or a personality disorder.

Also, someone raised in a household where at least one person suffers from an untreated mental health condition may pick up on their habits and be less inclined to seek help later.
