Myth vs. Fact

Eating less does not equal better health. This belief seems to center deeply around the idea that smaller bodies are somehow healthier than bigger bodies. This is not actually accurate at all. We can tell nothing about a person by the size of their body.

Our metabolism works much more efficiently when we are consuming enough food than it does when we eat very little. This could look like 3 meals and 2-3 snacks per day. These meals and snacks should include multiple food groups.

Eating fewer calories typically leads our metabolism to become less efficient which usually leads to that weight cycling we see when we go on diets and then come off of them.

Myth vs. Fact

There is no universal “hierarchy of foods” out there. I can promise this because I ask people daily about their views on what “good” vs “bad” foods are and they are rarely ever the same.

Food is food. It’s so much more than just nutritional value. It’s comfort, culture, community, excitement, pleasure, etc. It is so highly personal that we are doing each other a huge disservice by deeming certain foods off limits.

We also hurt others by assuming & commenting that the only way to eat “healthfully” is by eating only organic “unprocessed” foods. These foods are typically much more expensive & not actually any healthier. Frozen, fresh, or canned foods can all be part of a balanced life.

Myth vs. Facts

Our “self control” has nothing to do with our binges. Restriction is typically the center piece of binges.

Why & How??
I like to think of it like placing a big red button in front of a third grader & saying “don’t press this”. That’s all they can think about.

We are the same way when we don’t allow ourselves enough food or even if we avoid a certain type of food! We take it all in when we get the chance because we think we’ll never get the chance again. Restriction can be purposeful, accidental, &/or mental. But I assure you that having more “self control” isn’t going to fix it.

🎄Holiday Party Survival Guide 🎄
Holiday parties can be daunting when the topic of conversation always seems to be about food and body! Here’s some tips to handle these moments:

⭐️challenge diet talk: this one can be tough - but it can be done “politely” or with as much “spice” as you want to add. Respond to comments about food or body with things like “my plate is none of your business” or “I dont appreciate comments about my body”.

⭐️Don’t skip meals to “save” up for big meals. This will often lead to eating more than we want and feeling super uncomfortable.

⭐️give yourself Grace if you do get overly full. This is a normal human thing to do. You don’t have to punish yourself for it!

⭐️practice mindful eating- notice how you feel about the food infront of you! Does it look appealing? Taste good? Have a nice or weird texture?

⭐️view food functionally - see your food for what it is, not what you *think* it should be. It’s providing you energy & enjoyment.

⭐️The type of food you eat does not make you a better or worse person. The size of your body does not change your value as a person either.

⭐️Change the subject- honestly people don’t always even realize they’re talking about food or body, it’s so autopilot. Change the subject to something else- most of the time nobody will notice. And if they do 🤷🏼‍♀️ who cares?

Hi all, my name is Morgan McGrady- I am the face behind McGrady Nutrition Counseling! I am starting this venture to provide one-on-one nutrition counseling to those who struggle with disordered eating, poor relationship with food & self, or anyone looking for nutritional help with a weight neutral approach!

Top 3 things about me:
1) I am a wife & mom - living in Auburn, AL
2) I graduated from the University of Alabama & Samford University to become a Registered Dietitian
3) I love building relationships & making people feel safe

McGrady Nutrition Counseling will begin taking clients Nov. 1st. Services are provided virtually anywhere within the state of Alabama.
