Do you ever feel like your eyes are on fire?

Do your eyes ever water excessively, feel gritty, or just burn like crazy? Can you barely keep your eyes open after being on the computer or looking at your phone for a few hours? Does your vision go from clear to blurry and back again with every blink?

You may be suffering from Dry Eye Disease, or Ocular Surface Disease.

I talk to a lot of my patients about the overall comfort of their eyes and how to improve it as it is a very common issue.

Clear vision requires a normal and stable layer of tears over the front surface of the eye

The list of causes and treatment options is very long and complex.

Book an appointment with us now, if you are tired of suffering from your burning uncomfortable, watery, gritty, blurry eyes!

Are you or one of your loved ones diabetic⁉️

Here is why you need to have a thorough, dilated eye exam every year, and your family doctor has probably mentioned it to you too‼️

1. High blood sugar causes damage to blood vessels which can lead to bleeding and decreased oxygen to parts of the eye.

2. Blood contains VEGF, a protein that signals the growth of new blood vessels in the eye. These new blood vessels can lead to complications such as hemorrhages and retinal detachments.

3. The presence of new blood vessels, blood, or swelling in the eye as a result of uncontrolled blood sugar often requires anti-VEGF injections to help reduce bleeding and potential growth of these vessels.

4. This is one of the many reasons it is important to keep blood sugar controlled in terms of vision, not to mention over all health of your body.

If you are diabetic and have not had your eyes checked in a while, or are noticing changes in your vision, please give us a call at Vision Source Innovative Eye Care to book your appointment.

A new important study has come out on the correlation between near work in children and the progression of nearsightedness (myopia). The study concluded that for every Diopter of nearsightedness per hour of near work each day on average, the child is at 2% greater risk for worsening vision.

We are just beginning to understand how lifestyle habits along with other factors increase children’s risk of progression in near sightedness throughout childhood.

There are new treatment options to help slow down this vision change to help prevent worsening nearsightedness and associated complications later on down the road.

As doctors, our goal in treating nearsightedness has shifted from simply treatment to now the incorporation of prevention strategies.

Many of the patients I see ask me what a cataract is after I tell them they have one starting to form or needs removed.

So what in the world is a cataract?

There is a hard crystalline structure inside the eye that changes shape when you pick up your phone to read something, making it possible to focus at things both near and far.

When people turn about 40 they start to need bifocals because that lens gardens and can no longer change shape to focus.

And then when people start to get into their 60s-70s etc that lens becomes cloudy and glasses no longer are able to help the vision. A surgeon will remove the cataract and replace it with a clear prosthetic lens, usually correcting most or all of any glasses prescription the patient once had.

This is the number one most commonly performed surgery in the world because EVERYBODY will need it to see if they are around long enough to form the cataract.

Many patients prefer to not be dilated during their eye exams, so why do we do it? Is there any way to avoid it? Dilation makes vision blurry up close and increases sensitivity to light, so what’s the point?

A non-dilated pupil gets smaller when a bright light is shined into it, making viewing the back of the eye like trying to see a beautiful view out of a very, very tiny window. Dilation makes a much larger window and therefore makes it possible to see more of the retina.

All 3 of our Vision Source offices feature Wide-field retina cameras called Optomaps. They are fantastic for tracking changes in the retina and even show things out in the far periphery of the retina that can be missed with a good dilated eye exam. We like to do both to make sure our patients are getting the highest quality of care.

When should your child have an eye exam?

Great question!

Eyes of newborns do not require vision exams with the old 1s and 2s, but do need to be checked for a few common signs such as blink reflexes, pupil responses, and red reflex, which are commonly evaluated at birth but can also be verified by your local trusted optometrist. This evaluation is especially important for a premature infant.

Within 6-12 months of life, the child’s eyes should also be evaluated for alignment and movement to avoid any potential risks of long standing unnoticed misalignments may have on vision.

Within 12-36 months, this screening should be repeated for any signs of amblyopia or lazy eye as well as normal development.

Between 3-5, the child should have his or her first comprehensive eye exam including testing vision and refractive error, color and depth perception, repeating evaluation for misalignment or any signs of a lazy eye, and over all eye health.

At 5 years old and older, annual eye exams are recommended to evaluate all of the above mentioned aspects of an eye exam plus testing for nearsightedness or any other issues the child could be experiencing that could be due to vision ( it’s a long list!)

Hope this helps!
If you have a child you would like to have evaluated, don’t hesitate to give Vision Source Innovative Eye Care a call!
