In January 2020, I started to see an art therapist, Carol (which was very timely considering what was to come that March!) Early in our time, I said to her that I was so unhappy in my life that I drank alcohol to cope. She replied, “Maybe you are unhappy BECAUSE you drink.”

Although at first I wanted to deny it, I couldn’t. I was a heavy binge drinker most of my adult life, and after 30-ish years of it, it was starting to take its toll on my mental health and physical wellbeing.

It took 2 more years of trying to ‘moderate’ before I realized, I just had to abstain entirely. So, on Jan. 30, 2022, I had my last binge of alcohol. The first 6 months were the hardest, but a daily yoga practice truly was instrumental in helping me process the deep emotions I could no long try to avoid with alcohol.

And so, I’m excited to launch the 4th Friday Yoga Dance Party Class. Our The first class is September 26th, from 7 to 8:15 pm, where we'll jam out during yoga to some favorite 80's hair bands: Poison, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, and more! After class, I'll make us a special apple-themed mocktail because we all still deserve a fancy drink.

Gentle Yoga in the Park: Fall Edition meets this coming Monday, 9/15. Thanks to the generous support of the maineresiliencycenter in collaboration with the Lewiston Recreation Department these classes are 🆓 🆓 🆓!!!

Class begins at 5:30 pm; we meet near the river in Simard Payne Park. In case of inclement weather, we’ll move to the Armory, 65 Central Ave, Lewiston. Pre-register at the Lewiston Rec department's web page (https://www.lewistonrecreation.com) to receive weather related updates but walk-ins also welcome.

Bring a mat & bottle of water, and dress in comfortable clothes.

Come experience the benefits of yoga for yourself!!! Register for classes at https://honeybeehealinghive.com. All classes only $10 in September so you can try each style. Classes are limited to 12.

Yin Yoga: This is a more passive practice where we take gentle stretches that we hold for longer periods of time (3 to 5 minutes each) to target the connective tissues and regulate the nervous system. Many postures are seated, and the focus is on the entire physical and emotional body. This class is perfect for all levels and those feeling burned out, stressed, or overwhelmed with life.

Slow Flow & Stretch: This class invites you to let go of the hurried pace of daily life and, instead, savor the beauty of mindful movement and deep relaxation. Students will be guided through gentle, deliberate poses designed to enhance flexibility, balance, and relaxation. Open to all levels of practitioners.

Breathe & Flow Vinyasa Style: This class is faster paced and more active than the others. Participants should have yoga experience before attending. Class begins with a brief full-body warm up before moving to a vinyasa style practice, where we sync our breath with movement, and finish with our final resting pose, savasana.

Yoga poses that open the throat chakra:

🌉 Bridge: Lie on your back with knees bent, feet flat on the floor. Lift your hips towards the ceiling, keeping pressure on your shoulders.

🤸 Shoulder Stand: From a lying position, lift your legs & torso straight up, supporting your back with your hands. Keep your weight on your shoulders & upper arms.

🚜 Plow: From a shoulder stand, slowly lower your legs overhead until your toes touch the floor behind you. Keep your back straight and supported by your hands.

🐫 Camel: Kneel on the floor with knees hips distance apart. Place hands on your lower back or heels, and gently arch back, pushing your hips forward.

🐠Fish: Lie on your back, propped up on your elbows & forearms. Gently arch your back to lift your chest, allowing the crown of your head to rest back or on the mat.

🍽 Reverse Table: Sit with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, place your hands behind you with fingers facing forward, & lift your hips until your torso is parallel to the floor.

🐈 Cat: Start on all fours, then round your spine towards the ceiling, tucking your chin to your chest.

🐄 Cow: From all fours, arch your back by dropping your belly towards the floor & lifting your head & tailbone.

When I invite people to my yoga classes, they'll sometimes reply, "Oh, No, I'm not good at yoga."

But, there is no being bad at yoga (unless you are not practicing safely.) Outside of safety, if you show up, breathe, move a little to what your body needs, then guess what???

You. Have. Done. Yoga!

My Yin and Slow Flow classes are ideal for beginners. Check them out!

Yin:
Sundays at 9 am
Thursdays at 6:30 pm

Slow Flow:
Tuesdays at 6:30 pm
Wednesdays at noon.
