When Westerners, especially Americans, go “on mission” to far-off places, they bring skills, talents, and valuable experiences. But they also risk bringing a shallow cultural understanding and an overly simplistic framework for the problems and solutions faced by the communities they serve.
When it comes to closing healthcare gaps and sharing the gospel, no one understands the challenges and proven approaches better than local doctors and leaders. We never come with an outside attitude of, “Here’s your problem, and here’s what you need to do about it.”
Instead, we ask, “What challenges are YOU facing, and what has God called YOU to do about them?”
Our role is to support, augment, and catalyze the vision God has already placed in their hearts. Lasting change is only possible when local leaders own the vision.
That’s why when we partner on a project, we are first and foremost partnering with a leader, and then with the project God has called them to.
