I've just made greek yogurt for the first time, and I'm in love! Just briefly heat milk, cool, add a bit of yogurt, and ignore it for 12 hours. Then strain for a couple hours to drain some whey out (pictured in the bottle). So rich, thick, delicious and creamy!

Sugar alternatives have downsides too!

A new study has found a potential link between artificial sweeteners and accelerated cognitive decline, especially in people under 60 and those with diabetes.

Researchers followed over 12,000 adults for eight years and found that those who consumed the most sugar substitutes—like aspartame, saccharin, xylitol, erythritol, acesulfame-K, sorbitol, and tagatose—had a 62% faster decline in memory and thinking skills compared to those who consumed the least.

People consuming the highest amounts (around 191 mg/day) showed signs of brain aging equivalent to an extra 1.6 years, even after accounting for factors like age, smoking, and medical conditions. While the study doesn’t prove causation, the results raise serious concerns about long-term artificial sweetener use, especially in midlife—a critical period for setting the trajectory of brain health.

Interestingly, the link was strongest in younger adults and those with diabetes, highlighting the need for further research into how these sweeteners might affect brain function and why certain groups are more vulnerable.

🔍 While more controlled studies are needed to understand the biological mechanisms, experts suggest it may be wise to limit artificial sweetener intake—not just for metabolic health, but potentially for brain health as well.

Movement is good for the body and soul! This study found "people who walked 7,000 steps per day had a 31% lower risk of depression, when compared with those who walked 5,000 steps per day or less, and daily step counts above 7,500 were associated with a 43% lower prevalence of depression."

A review of data from 33 studies found that increasing daily steps may help reduce depression symptoms. Researchers reported in JAMA Network Open that people who walked 7,000 steps per day had a 31% lower r...

The Eat Right Story

It started with a dream and a dietitian! Until a couple years ago I worked in a hospital, helping patients get better by providing proper nutrition interventions. However, what if I could get to some of those folks before they got sick? What if I could help them prevent their illnesses- at least some illnesses, at least?

It turns out that the word for that is “wellness”, and it’s what I’m setting out to do for others. I have a goal of helping those in the Auburn/Opelika area stay healthy or get healthy through eating right. My mission is to to help clients set SMART goals, make peace with food and eating, educate them on nutritious eating, teach them needed skills by building healthy lifelong habits, and coach them toward success in achieving their nutrition goals to help ensure happy lives. My vision is a community of citizens who listen to their bodies, are knowledgeable about nutrition, feel at ease with food selection and shopping, and enjoy spending time eating with one another.

I am a Registered Dietitian. I eat all the food groups. I don’t eat “organic” (unless it’s on sale!). I eat sweets in moderate amounts. I eat mostly unprocessed foods from all the food groups. I put real cream in my coffee and eat actual bacon. I get my five (or more) servings a day of fruits and vegetables in a rainbow of colors. I try to get my daily requirement of whole grains, but white pasta is so much more tasty. I listen to my body’s hunger and fullness signals, but I often suffer from being a member of the “clean plate club”. I take supplements sometimes because I don’t always get every nutrient I need (and because my husband works at the company that makes NatureMade). I know that carbs won’t make me fat, and neither will fat. We eat dinner as a family at the dining room table every. single. night. I eat pizza just about weekly (I do have 4 kids, after all). I love cooking on the stove and in my toaster oven. I eat out about once a week. My kids don’t get to opt out of eating anything I make. A healthy diet is 80/20. I don’t count calories, carbs, or anything else. And I’m healthy, with any meaning of the word.

In counseling my clients I use the same guidelines for them that I live by. After all, I can’t demand they “eat as I say, not as I do”, can I? I don’t make meal plans because a healthy diet can look a thousand different ways. I take my client’s current diet and adjust it to their preferences and style of eating so that they aren’t making radical changes but are still improving their diets, choice by choice.
