Dr. Courtney Sproat, PT, DPT, CLT

Dr. Courtney Sproat, PT, DPT, CLT I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy who specializes in breast rehab and lymphatic care. I am also dry needling certified in the state of Indiana.

I’m a Certified Lymphedema Therapist, certified breast cancer rehabilitation therapist, certified Lymph Flow Yoga instructor, and BioScan SRT and dry needling certified. I grew up in Garrett, Indiana, and graduated from Garrett High School in 2009. While at Garrett, I was actively involved in sports (soccer, basketball, and track) and student council. I went on to earn my Associate's Degree in Radiography and Bachelor's degree in Medical Imaging Technology from Indiana University, but after working in the field for 5 years, I decided to return to school to become a Doctor of Physical Therapy. I graduated from Trine University in 2022, and began working in cancer rehab after graduating. I have always wanted to work in healthcare to help others, but truly found my passion once I began helping people throughout their cancer journey. I am a certified breast cancer rehabilitation therapist and a certified lymphedema therapist. My goal is to educate and empower people before, during, and after their cancer treatment to improve their quality of life. I am happily married to my high school sweetheart, and we live in the country here in Auburn, Indiana, with our 2 dogs and 2 cats. I enjoy spending time outdoors in nature, traveling, spending time with family and friends, and watching sports, especially college basketball, Notre Dame football, and the Indianapolis Colts.

Today is World Lymphedema Day 💙

Lymphedema affects millions of people worldwide, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood and under-recognized medical conditions. For those living with lymphedema, every day can involve managing swelling, protecting the skin, wearing compression, and prioritizing lymphatic health.

But today is about more than the condition itself — it’s about awareness, education, advocacy, and hope.

Lymphedema can develop after cancer treatment, surgery, trauma, or from congenital causes. While it is a lifelong condition and there is no cure, it is manageable, and people living with lymphedema deserve access to proper care, early diagnosis, and knowledgeable providers.

As a Certified Lymphedema Therapist, I have the privilege of working with individuals navigating this journey. I witness daily the resilience, strength, and determination of those managing lymphedema, and it continues to inspire me.

Today we:
💙 Raise awareness
💙 Support those living with lymphedema
💙 Advocate for better access to treatment and education
💙 Celebrate progress in lymphatic health and research

If you or someone you love lives with lymphedema, please know you are not alone. Your experience matters, your voice matters, and your care matters.

Let’s continue spreading awareness so more people receive the support and treatment they deserve.

Good morning and happy Monday! I have 2 different yoga classes this week, please read the information below.

The first class is Thursday starting at 5:00 PM and will be held at DeKalb Chamber Partnership in Auburn. This class is always performed seated in chairs. You can register for this class through Auburn Massage & Wellness Centre, reach out to me personally, scan the QR code in the image below, or use this link: https://www.vagaro.com/auburnmassagecentre/classes

My second class is Saturday morning starting at 10:30 AM and will be held at Sangha Yoga in Garrett. This studio is located in the basement of The Vault. This class will be performed both sitting and standing on yoga mats and will be a little more advanced but still very beginner in nature. You can sign up through Sangha Yoga’s website and link here: https://www.vagaro.com/sanghayoga1/classes

Both of these classes are gentle and beginner in nature because we are targeting the lymphatic system. It is not your usual yoga class. The first half of the class we perform self-lymphatic drainage, which I guide you through step-by-step, along with breath work and then the second half we perform gentle movements and stretching to create muscle pumps to help our lymph flow and finish the class with a mindfulness technique.

Please reach out if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you at one of these classes!

More exciting news!!

I’m really trying to build up my lymphatic yoga classes because I enjoy teaching them and I’ve had such great feedback.

So for any class registered through Auburn Massage & Wellness Centre, once you pay and attend 3 classes, your 4th class will be free! This only applies to individual classes held in-person at DeKalb Chamber Partnership or online through Vagaro. It does not include workshops or events held outside of these locations at this time.

✨ Understanding Lymphatic Work: What’s the Difference?

You may hear terms like manual lymphatic drainage, lymphatic massage, and lymphatic facials. While they sound similar, they serve different purposes and are performed by different professionals.

🩺 Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized, medically-based technique developed by Dr. Emil Vodder and used in clinical settings.

✔ Performed by Certified Lymphedema Therapists and medically trained providers (usually PT’s, OT’s, & massage therapists)
✔ Used for lymphedema, post-surgical swelling, oncology recovery, and chronic edema
✔ Uses precise sequencing and extremely light skin stretch
✔ No oils or lotions are used
✔ Follows specific lymphatic drainage pathways

💆‍♀️ Lymphatic Massage (Whole Body) is a gentle wellness massage approach that supports relaxation and encourages fluid movement.

✔ Typically performed by licensed massage therapists
✔ Promotes relaxation and circulation
✔ May reduce mild fluid retention and support recovery
✔ May incorporate light oil or lotion
✔ Usually not a treatment for medical lymphatic conditions

🌿 Lymphatic-Inspired Facials is a cosmetic facial massage designed to reduce puffiness and promote skin vitality.

✔ Performed by licensed estheticians or trained professionals
✔ Encourages superficial fluid movement
✔ Helps reduce facial puffiness & sinus congestion
✔ Enhances skin glow and relaxation
✔ Does not treat lymphatic disorders

✨ All three approaches can support wellness when used appropriately.

If you have persistent swelling, recent surgery, or a history of lymph node removal, I highly encourage you to find a Certified Lymphedema Therapist.

Education empowers safe, effective care.

I am very passionate about my work and what I do. I want people to receive the proper care and treatment from properly trained and certified professionals. Lymphatic drainage may be trending but it is often used loosely in marketing to promote services so don’t be afraid to ask for someone’s credentials!

I completed a 135-hour certification program after graduate school to become a Certified Lymphedema Therapist and have been working in the field for almost 4 years. I still continue to learn and expand my knowledge in this area because people have real lymphatic conditions that are often overlooked and/or misdiagnosed.

I know lymphatic drainage techniques for the whole body, I understand the lymphatic anatomy and the body’s natural pathways, I know when it is safe to perform lymphatic drainage and when it is not. Anyone offering lymphatic drainage should know all of this, too. Your lymphatic system is one of the most important systems in your body and deserves proper care just like your circulatory and respiratory systems. It plays a crucial role in your overall health and you want to make sure you put it in good hands when receiving services. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you ever have any questions.

Beginning in March, I am going to start offering my yoga classes online. I plan to schedule some individual classes but for now, I’m offering a workshop each month. It costs $45 and you have access to all 4 classes every Tuesday morning starting at 9:00 AM. This class combines self-administered lymphatic drainage that I’ll guide you through, breath work, gentle yoga movement and stretches, and mindfulness techniques. Look forward to seeing you all online!

I have a lot of new and exciting things I’m developing and will be rolling out over the next few weeks. My first one is a new location for my yoga class!

It’s the same class I’ve been holding at DeKalb Chamber in Auburn but now Sangha Yoga in Garrett has graciously welcomed me into their studio to hold a class. The first class will be held Saturday March 7th from 10:30-11:30 AM. As usual, everyone is welcomed. This class is beneficial for all of us because we all have a lymphatic system and we need to give ourselves self love and care. This class combines self-lymphatic drainage that I will guide you through, breath work, gentle movements and stretches, and a mindfulness technique. I plan to perform this class on yoga mats instead of from a chair like my previous classes but it is still very beginner in nature and is meant to be gentle and target the lymphatic system.

Sign-up for this will be through Sangha Yoga’s calendar and link below. Reach out if you have any questions!
