Jane Addams (1860–1935), one of the founders of social work, believed that strong communities are built through compassion, advocacy, and practical support.

Her work at Hull House created access to education, childcare, and health services for immigrant families and underserved communities.

Her legacy lives on in every social worker and community-based clinician who walks alongside individuals in pursuit of stability and wellness.

Dorothea Dix (1802–1887) was a teacher and social reformer who transformed how the United States cared for people living with mental illness.

At a time when individuals were often jailed or institutionalized in inhumane conditions, Dix pushed for dignity, structured care, and state-supported treatment facilities. Her advocacy led to the creation or expansion of dozens of hospitals across the country.

Her work reminds us that mental health advocacy has always required courage, and that systems can change when people demand better.

Dr. Marsha Linehan, psychologist and researcher, developed Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a treatment model that has transformed care for individuals experiencing emotional dysregulation, trauma, and suicidal ideation.

Her work helped shift the narrative from blame to understanding, emphasizing skills, acceptance, and compassion.

Innovations like DBT remind us that clinical progress is rooted in listening deeply to lived experience and responding with evidence-based care.

March is Women’s History Month.

Throughout history, women have shaped the fields of psychology, social work, psychiatry, and community care — often without recognition. Their advocacy has expanded access to care, challenged stigma, and strengthened the systems that support families and communities.

This month, we’ll be highlighting a few women whose leadership continues to influence how we understand healing and resilience today.

Because when we honor history, we strengthen the future.

Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, founder of Therapy for Black Girls, is transforming how we talk about mental health — and who gets to be part of the conversation.

Through her podcast, community, and resources, Dr. Joy makes therapy more accessible and relatable, especially for Black women and girls.

At HAM, we believe in that same mission: reducing stigma, increasing access, and creating a safe, affirming space for healing.

This American Heart Month, we’re raising awareness about the powerful connection between your emotional and physical well-being.

Stress, anxiety, and depression don’t just weigh on the mind — they impact the heart. And heart disease can increase the risk of mental health challenges, too.

At Health Affiliates Maine, we care for the whole person. Support for mental health is support for heart health.
