I had the great pleasure to visit the dementia village one year ago while in the Netherlands. It was as amazing as it sounds to witness. This concept is one that values humanity like no other for our precious aging population! And now, proves to be a protective function in limiting a viral spread of this proportion killing too many institutionalized elderly in the U.S and elsewhere.

I am encouraging anyone and everyone to “heart” hug every single person in your home ... people that you are able to do so safely at this time.

HEART HUG: That means each of you come in for the hug to the Left side of the other... so that you are heart to heart.

Hug for 20 seconds. Do this in silence to honor the moment.

I want you to Fully embrace another human being. Be present and mindful of your hug. Be both giving AND Receiving.

Do it! Right now!
We all NEED touch.

Your brain will release “oxytocin”, a feel-good hormone in your brain, like a happy drug. It will make you both feel so good! I promise.

Now Pass this on to any and every human being you know!

Then... repeat, repeat, repeat!

My mom has stage six Alzheimer’s. On her good days, she can talk to me a little bit. I can feed her a bite and ask, “Do you like this?” She can say “yes” or shake her head; occasionally she’ll say “good” when I give her ice cream. Those days are rare and precious. But I’ve learned ...

What a wonderful townwide effort to educate the public on dementia and provide caregivers and those afflicted with this disease some understanding so they can best enjoy public space without fear of speculation of their circumstances.

This particular idea is so awesome for anyone anywhere too.

"For caregivers... make up something like a business card and give it to the server when you are seated that indicates they are with someone with a memory issue — it is a positive way to quietly advocate for the person living with dementia."

Treating the whole person along with family/caregiver input when warranted is always the best way to make informed decisions as a patient or provider.

These patients are not aware of the true risks, and surgeons aren’t telling them, new research suggests.
