Mohs Monday โญ Pictured here is a large multi-stage mohs procedure repaired with combination of an island pedicle flap and small full thickness skin graft. This technique maintains natural cosmetic junctions and hides the scars in the natural lines and folds of the face. No revisions performed showing a great result at the six-week follow up and the scar will continue to improve with time!

For this Mohs Monday, let's talk about Squamous Cell Carcinoma, a form of skin cancer.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC, squamous rhymes with "famous") is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising from the squamous cells in the outmost layer of skin (epidermis).
SCCs are common on sun-exposed areas such as the ears, face, scalp, neck and hands, where the skin often reveals signs of sun damage, including wrinkles and age spots.
Cumulative, long-term exposure to UV radiation from the sun and tanning beds causes most SCCs.
SCC is the second most common form of skin cancer. An estimated 1.8 million cases are diagnosed each year in the U.S.
SCCs can sometimes grow rapidly and metastasize if not detected and treated early. As many as 15,000 deaths occur from invasive SCC of the skin each year in the U.S.
Mohs surgery is the most effective technique for removing SCCs, sparing the greatest amount of healthy tissue while achieving the highest possible cure rate โ€“ up to 97 percent for tumors treated for the first time. Mohs is also used for SCCs that have recurred, and for tumors that are large or growing rapidly, as well as ones with indistinct edges.

A fellowship trained Mohs surgeon, like Dr. Paine here at Savannah River Dermatology, has spent additional training after residency learning to perform Mohs surgery learning to remove squamous cell carcinoma and in treating both early and more advanced SCC.

Do I have rosaceaโ€ฆ or just sensitive skin? ๐Ÿค”

If your redness never really fades, your skin might be trying to tell you something.

Look for these common (and often missed) signs of rosacea:
โœจ Persistent redness across cheeks + nose
โœจ Visible blood vessels
โœจ Flushing that comes and goes
โœจ Acne-like bumps
โœจ Burning or stinging skin

If your redness never seems to go away, it may be rosacea. Make an appointment with our team so that we can help identify what your skin needs and create a treatment plan tailored to you.

As the CSRA returns from spring break, we want to take a moment to remind everyone that skin cancer can happen to anyone โ€“ at any age.
Keziah was treated by Dr. Paine last year for a basal cell carcinoma. Dr. Dilip Thomas at Augusta University did the repair.

โ€œMy parents had preached this all growing up, and I wish I had listened years ago. They told me to stay out of tanning beds and always wear my sunscreen - ya know, good advice from parents who have been around a little while!

This year, the result of the sun damage caught up with me, and I had a spot of basal-cell carcinoma removed from underneath my left eye. It was scary, knowing that at a young age, I was already seeing what happens when you donโ€™t protect your skin.

I had incredible doctors at Savannah River Dermatology and the recovery has been very smooth. It has taught me to not only make sure that Iโ€™m getting my annual check scheduled, but to also wear sunscreen everyday. I also have not - and will not ever step foot in a tanning bed ever again.

So just like my parents told me, I am telling you: take care of your skin. We get one body in this life so be sure you are taking care of it in all aspects!โ€

Take care of your skin.โ€ โ€“ Keziah

Take it from Keziah! Your skin is something youโ€™ll wear your whole life - protect it!

Walking the course all day? Your skin care caddy matters just as much as your golf caddy

Pack like a pro to protect your glow:
๐Ÿ”ธ SPF 50 sunscreen (your MVP)
๐Ÿ”ธ Lip SPF (donโ€™t skip it)
๐Ÿ”ธ Sunglasses (style + protection)
๐Ÿ”ธ Mineral powder SPF (for easy reapplication between holes)
๐Ÿ”ธ Hydrating mist (because sun + wind = thirsty skin)

Long days on the green call for smart skin strategy! Reapply, refresh, and keep your complexion in the game. โœจ
