"It was during the 1980s that Sawadogo, seeing that the measures taken by the authorities were not producing results, decided to take matters into his own hands. Sawadogo employed two traditional methods – Zaï and cordons pierreux, in his battle against the desertification of his country. As these traditional ways were regarded as odd by his community, Sawadogo was initially thought to have lost his mind, and was ridiculed."

This is us!

Taking Nature Back is an event, an opportunity, a time to pause for the cause. It's a regional and national environmental lovefest. And it’s a Black healing, welcoming, organizing, celebrating, networking space. Our theme is Call and Response: Elevating our Stories, Naturally! This year we're elevating our stories chautauqua-style, so be on the lookout for speakers, creators, innovators, scientists, educators, musicians, artists, and entertainers telling their stories about everything from climate change to environmental justice and environmental joy in creative.

In a historic pick, New Mexico Rep. and Green New Deal champion Deb Haaland is poised to become secretary of the interior! She’d be the first Indigenous person to serve as a Cabinet member.

The historic choice would elevate a Native American to a cabinet secretary position for the first time, and do so at an agency that played a central role in the nation’s long-running abuse of native peoples.
