The Supreme Court’s decision to allow mifepristone to continue to be sent by mail and provided by pharmacies is welcome news for patients and providers across the country who have been dealing with chaos and confusion these past few weeks.

Mifepristone has been proven to be safe and effective medical care for more than 25 years. We know our opponents’ legal maneuvers have exactly nothing to do with safety; and everything to do with the desire to control other people’s bodies. Expanded access via telehealth has helped patients receive care in a more timely and equitable way, especially for those who live in rural areas where the nearest abortion provider could be hours away. Mifepristone is just as safe when provided via telehealth as it is in a clinic.

Maine has a long history of providing telehealth abortion care; it was the second state in the U.S. to provide telehealth abortion care in 2016. And Maine Family Planning was the first provider in Maine to offer medication abortion. More recently, one-fourth (27%) of all abortions in Maine were via telehealth in the first six months of 2025.

We will never abandon our patients. Mainers who need timely access to safe, effective abortion care, including those who live in the rural parts of our state, will continue to receive it. Medication abortion is still safe, legal, and available in Maine.

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court extended its temporary stay on the Fifth Circuit’s ban on mailing Mifepristone to patients as part of their telehealth visit. While it is good news that Mifepristone remains unrestricted, the chaos and confusion are harmful to patients and health providers alike.

Mifepristone has been proven to be safe and effective medical care for more than 25 years. All patients deserve access to the most popular form of abortion care, no matter where they live. Mainers who need timely access to safe, effective abortion care, including the vast swath who live in the rural parts of our state, will continue to receive it. Medication abortion is still safe, legal, and available in Maine.

Reproductive justice means every mother deserves to be home with her family. This Mother's Day, we're sharing the work of the Black Mama's Bail Out.

Organized by National Bail Out, the Black Mama's Bail Out pays bail for Black mothers and caregivers who are sitting in jail, not because a court found them guilty of anything, but because they can't afford to pay their way out. Cash bail falls hardest on people who are poor, and Black women are incarcerated at disproportionately high rates before trial.

At Maine Family Planning, we believe bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are inseparable from racial and economic justice. Supporting Black mamas getting home to their kids is part of that same fight.
