This Black History Month, we're proud to honor the Black activists and leaders whose work has been foundational to the Reproductive Justice movement. From fighting for bodily autonomy to advocating for accessible healthcare, their contributions continue to inspire our mission today.

We also acknowledge a painful reality: Black people in the United States often experience worse healthcare outcomes, with Black Americans facing maternal mortality rates over two times higher than white Americans, according to the CDC. These disparities are rooted in systemic racism and unequal access to quality care.

At Maine Family Planning, we remain committed to equity in all we do. We're dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality reproductive healthcare to every Mainer who walks through our doors, and we'll continue working toward a future where everyone has equal access to the care they need and deserve. 💙

Despite federal attacks, Maine stands strong. Our protections for gender-affirming care remain in place, and we're not going anywhere. If you need care or have questions, we're here. MaineFamilyPlanning.org 💙🏳️‍⚧️

As we face three more years under the Trump administration, ongoing support will be critical to offset lost federal Medicaid funding.

Throughout these challenges, we've never turned away a single Medicaid patient, even without receiving reimbursements. Ensuring all patients receive quality care, regardless of their ability to pay, remains at the heart of our mission.

But our resources are stretched thin. Knowing that state funding is coming to protect patient access means everything to our communities and the people we serve.

Today, Governor Janet Mills announced she will allocate $2.25 million in her supplemental budget to support Maine reproductive health care providers and offset federal funding cuts. The following is a statement from George Hill, President & CEO of Maine Family Planning:

“On behalf of the nearly 30,000 patients served in 63 sites by Maine Family Planning, Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, and the statewide network of family planning clinics, we sincerely thank Governor Mills for so directly demonstrating her commitment to reproductive health care in Maine.

“Maine providers and patients are facing a health care crisis due to the Trump Administration and congressional Republicans’ vast federal cuts. Governor Mills’ supplemental budget proposal would backfill the Medicaid funds that Maine Family Planning and Planned Parenthood Northern New England didn’t receive over the past six months, while continuing to serve Medicaid patients at no charge. These funds will provide crucial family planning funding and help ensure Mainers, especially in rural Maine, have increased access to the confidential, high-quality health care they need and deserve.”
