One year ago, we lost Lynn Roberts Reed—a dedicated funeral director, former owner of Knowlton Hewins and Roberts Funeral Home, and a truly compassionate soul.

Lynn’s kindness and steady presence brought comfort to so many during life’s hardest moments. Her legacy of care, dignity, and service continues to live on in the community she served so faithfully.

She is deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

From then to now

Knowlton & Hewins was founded in the 1920s by Frank E. Knowlton and Charles W. Hewins, with a commitment to serving Augusta families with dignity and compassion.

The first photo shows one of our original images in black and white. We recently reimagined it in color — a way to bring new life to a meaningful part of our history.

The final image shows Knowlton & Hewins today. While much has changed over the years, our dedication to caring for families with respect and thoughtful guidance remains the same.

Before Leon C. Roberts (pictured) established the Roberts Funeral Home in Winthrop in 1923, the funeral business in his family was carried on by his father, Nathan Roberts. William Harrison Roberts (Leon’s great-great-great-grandfather) began the family’s mortuary tradition in the mid-1800s, and Nathan was one of William’s sons’ children who continued working as an undertaker in the Readfield area prior to Leon’s move to Winthrop after a fire destroyed their previous location. Leon took over from his father after Nathan’s death and then opened the Bowdoin Street funeral parlor in Winthrop.
