Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship program helps fill a statewide void.

The Department of Family and Community Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia has been building a sports medicine presence over the past four years, including a fellowship to boost training in sports and exercise medicine for primary care physicians to serve patients more comprehensively.

The division has also expanded to include the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship, becoming the only public medical school in Georgia to offer the program.

MCG researchers uncover how exercise reboots vascular health in diabetes.

“People with type 2 diabetes commonly have unhealthy blood vessels, which is caused by endothelial dysfunction. The inner lining of the blood vessels made up of endothelial cells doesn’t work properly, raising the risk of heart disease, stroke and poor circulation,” said Masuko Ushio-Fukai, PhD, a professor of medicine in the Vascular Biology Center at MCG and co-principal investigator of the study.

“The superoxide dismutase is one of the keys to understanding the mechanism of how exercise improves our vascular health,” says Tohru Fukai, MD, PhD.

Augusta University researchers are investigating a protein found in the tears of preterm babies in the hopes of developing a better treatment for retinopathy of prematurity, a condition leading to blindness in about 500 infants each year.
https://loom.ly/rNTBmWs
The Knights Templar Eye Foundation Inc. recently awarded a $90,000 grant to Yusra Zaidi, PhD, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Vascular Biology Center of the Medical College of Georgia, to explore how a naturally occurring protein could potentially prevent retinopathy of prematurity in this young and vulnerable patient population.

“If retinopathy of prematurity is treated early, vision can be improved or saved, and we can protect the future of these infants,” says Yusra Zaidi, PhD.
