Happy Holidays from our MistleTOES to yours! To celebrate National Sock Day, Small TALK, Wellstar’s Pediatric Literacy Program, teamed with NICU nurses, Small TALK Nurse Navigators and community partners at West Cobb Regional Library and One More Row to gift every baby at Wellstar Kennestone and Wellstar West Georgia Medical Centers a pair of handmade jingle bell MistleTOE booties. Parents were encouraged to jingle tiny toes and say, “Look! Your toes are jingling!” This simple joyful moment helps little ones build early language skills and connect with the world around them. Born weighing just over 1 pound, with Down syndrome and a congenital heart defect, Cooper spent his first 372 days at Wellstar Children’s Hospital of Georgia, moving from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) after lifesaving heart surgery. Access to expert care in our PICU, advanced technology and dedicated specialists gave Cooper the chance to heal and thrive. By expanding the PICU at Wellstar Children's Hospital of Georgia from 14 to 22 beds, more children like Cooper can receive critical care when time matters most. Help us make that possible with a year end donation: https://utm.guru/ujlWh.

Meet Layla! When Layla was 6 years old she went to the pediatrician because she was incredibly lethargic and had no appetite. A blood sugar test revealed Layla has Type 1 Diabetes and was currently in ketoacidosis. Layla was immediately sent to the Wellstar Children’s Hospital of Georgia’s emergency room and then admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Layla’s mom, Meagan, said Nurse Traci has been a life saver from the beginning. She spent hours with Layla and her family, ensuring they had the education and tools needed to manage Layla’s diabetes with confidence.

Layla is now 10 years old and loves making bracelets, playing basketball and spending time with family. Call NOW and give a gift that makes a difference for kids like Layla! Call 1-866-412-KIDS(5437), text CHOG to 34984 or visit caresforkidsradiothon.com

Meet Levi! At 4 years old Levi was sick for 8 days, running high fevers and having trouble breathing. After multiple pediatrician appointments with no answers, they came to the Wellstar Children’s Hospital of Georgia’s emergency department desperate for someone to help. The Pediatric ED team immediately found Levi’s lungs were filled with fluid and within two hours he was headed into surgery with Dr. Hatley. Unfortunately surgery revealed an orange-sized tumor in his chest and a diagnosis of T-Cell Lymphoblastic Leukemia. On August 29, after 1,242 days of treatment, Levi finally rang the bell! Levi continues to receive care at Wellstar Children’s Hospital to treat symptoms caused by treatment. Levi’s mom, Hannah, says the family they have created through Wellstar Children’s has held their family up on the hard days.

Levi is now 7 years old and loves Spy Kids, fishing, and football. Call now and give a gift that makes a difference for kids like Levi! Call 1-866-412-KIDS (5437), text CHOG to 34984 or visit caresforkidsradiothon.com

It was an extra special reunion today between Emma and Wellstar Children’s Hospital of Georgia team member Catherine!

In June 2010 the world came crashing down around Jeremy and Nikki, parents to then 3 year old Emma. After being admitted to the hospital for what appeared to be dehydration, Emma received fluids and was planning to go home the following day. In a short 24 hours, Emma went from skipping around and playing to no longer being able to stand; Emma’s body began to spasm, her heart rate increased and her blood pressure dropped. Emma then entered a semi-comatose state and spent the next 30 days in Wellstar Children’s Hospital of Georgia Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Even after being discharged, Emma’s symptoms continued but the cause remated a mystery. Two years later Emma finally received a diagnosis of Mitochondrial Disease. Emma is now left with permanent effects from the disease but continues to show incredible strength and resilience.

Today Emma is 19 years old, just graduated high school and continues to bring joy to those around her with her infectious bubbly personality!

Meet siblings, Jansen and Ellie! Although completely unrelated, both have Congenital Heart Defects. When Ellie was 2 weeks old her pediatrician heard a murmur, and at only 4 months old she had open heart surgery at Wellstar Children’s Hospital of Georgia. Only 3 years later, big brother Jansen got the flu and that was when his pediatrician heard a heart murmur. Jansen was quickly referred to Wellstar Children’s Hospital’s cardiology department and underwent open heart surgery.

Today, both Jansen and Ellie are doing great! Jansen is 6 years old and loves farm life, helping take care of the family’s 20+ animals and catching lizards, frogs, and turtles. Ellie is 4 years old and loves Disney princesses, especially Merida from Brave. She also loves the color pink and all things Barbie!
