MDFMR is a diverse community of learners committed to providing compassionate and comprehensive primary care to the rural and underserved communities of central Maine through a training program for residents and students that aims to be both rigorous and personally fulfilling. MDFMR was founded in 1973, and has advocated for the value and relevance of the family doctor on the local and national stage ever since. Our initial goal was to train physicians in the full breadth of primary care to serve rural communities in Maine; now we feel confident that our graduates have both the clinical acumen as well as the independent learning skills to provide basic health care for all people anywhere in the country or around the world.

🌿 Yesterday’s sunshine set the perfect scene for our 3rd year UNE cohort and 4th year SUBIs to experience mindfulness and hands-on learning! They started with a peaceful meditation walk on the labyrinth at ACH, then explored the rich variety of medicinal plants thriving in Dr. Moss’ home gardens.

A special thank you to Dr. Woytowicz (founder MDFMR Integrative Medicine program) from Avena Botanical Gardens and Dr. Moss for guiding them through the identification and uses of each plant and tincture. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature and enjoy some fresh air together! 🌱✨

Immersive didactics in action! 🌻✨
This week, our residents spent Tuesday’s didactics in the gardens at Avena Botanicals, learning from experts who truly know their roots—literally. Thanks to Deb Soule (herbalist) and Dr. John Woytowicz (founder of our MDFMR Integrative Medicine program), we enjoyed a hands-on lesson in integrative medicine. Exploring the intersection of nature and medicine offered practical insights into how holistic approaches can enhance patient care. Grateful for opportunities to deepen our understanding—and to spend time in the presence of experts in their field.
