Per the dietary guidelines for Americans, it is recommended that the average adult has about 3 servings of vegetables/day.

One serving is equal to 1 cup of fresh vegetables, except with leafy greens where 1 serving = 2 cups.

Frozen and canned vegetables are also an acceptable alternative to fresh.

The average person simply is not getting enough in their regular diet. Increasing fruit and vegetable consumption provides valuable vitamins, nutrients, and fiber to maintain optimal health, while limiting excess calorie intake.

Loneliness Awareness Week

Humans are hardwired to need other people and, when a person doesnโ€™t have enough interactions with others, they get lonely. Loneliness is a natural, universal emotion that may ebb and flow but will likely impact every human being on the face of the planet. Even though modern society is more โ€˜connectedโ€™ than ever, loneliness has grown into what some are calling an epidemic. In fact, a recent report from the US Surgeon General has warned that loneliness has become a risk factor for mental and physical health, stating its impact on mortality may be as harmful as smoking. Loneliness Awareness Week is here to act as a way to inform the public about the impact of loneliness and also a call to action for communities to band together with creative ideas on how to reconnect and overcome these issues.

๐ŸŒ Today is World Schizophrenia Awareness Day

Schizophrenia is a serious mental health condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. Symptoms like hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking can make daily life incredibly challenging.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Unfortunately, stigma and misunderstanding still surround this conditionโ€”often making life even harder for those affected.

World Schizophrenia Awareness Day is a time to:
โœ”๏ธ Raise awareness
โœ”๏ธ Challenge stigma
โœ”๏ธ Promote compassion
โœ”๏ธ Support early intervention and better care

By learning more and speaking openly, we can help build more inclusive, understanding communities for everyoneโ€”especially those living with schizophrenia.

Her involvement helped ensure that the strategies and insights presented are grounded in real-world experiences and best practices for reaching rural Mainers and other underserved communities.

The toolkit serves as a valuable guide for organizations nationwide looking to improve health outcomes and promote self-management among older adults and individuals with chronic conditions living in rural areas.

Along with NCOA, Lutheran Services of America and AARP OATS, Jen spoke on the finished toolkit at the American Society on Aging, โ€˜On Aging 2025โ€™ conference in Orlando, Florida in April.
