This beautiful new space is designed to support families as they prepare to bring their little ones home, offering a comforting environment where parents can be more involved in their baby’s care.

We know the first step in managing blood pressure is knowing your numbers. Check it in the Chair is an impactful collaboration between the American Heart Association, Piedmont Augusta, and local barbershops. Together, we are placing validated blood pressure devices and educational resources in trusted community spaces, barbershops, where many of our community members routinely visit and gather. Barbers have become champions for heart health and vital allies in the fight against hypertension. Thanks to Piedmont Augusta, shops are now receiving devices that can be given to patrons who don’t have access at home.

It’s been 34 years since 70-year-old Jimmy Mauldin from Fayetteville had his heart transplant. That’s nearly a survivorship record for Georgia! Thanks to high-quality follow-up care from Dr. Arun Krishnamoorthy at the Samsky Advanced Heart Failure Clinic, Jimmy enjoyed a family camping trip to West Point Lake to mark the milestone this summer.

Did you know Piedmont is among the top five centers in the country for performing heart transplants? Last year, over 100 people got new hearts at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital.

Cheers to many more years of fishing, Jimmy!

Piedmont Augusta's Allied Health Division partnered with Augusta Technical College Nursing to launch an interdisciplinary clinical simulation, bringing together students from nursing, cardiovascular technology, radiologic technology and clinical lab sciences. In a real-world scenario, students worked side by side to care for a complex cardiovascular patient using teamwork, communication and patient-centered care. This simulation was a step toward the future of healthcare, where clinical integration leads to better outcomes and safer patients. Congratulations to our students, faculty and high school externs who participated. You're shaping the future of healthcare together!

Two years ago this month, Amy Larimer underwent brain surgery performed by Dr. David McCracken to remove a cancerous tumor after going to Piedmont Newton's ER after experiencing episodes of dizziness and nausea for several months. This summer Amy celebrated her daughter’s wedding, and she can’t wait to begin her 18th year of teaching elementary school this August. The journey to get where she is today has been challenging, but she celebrates her victory as a brain cancer survivor and is thankful for the compassion and expert care she received at Piedmont Brain Tumor Center in Atlanta. She continues to have follow-up screenings every three months, but she finds peace knowing she is in good hands, where quality care has given her a new lease on life.

Back during the pandemic, it was easy for Barry Ingram to put off a colorectal screening that his Piedmont family medicine doctor recommended, but he ended up putting it off for three years— a decision that may have drastically changed the course of his life in the years to follow. His screening revealed he had colon cancer and needed eight inches of his colon removed.

Barry regrets not following through earlier on, and he now encourages other men to schedule regular hassle-free health screenings and not ignore them like he did. He’s thankful he finally listened to his provider because the outcome could have been even worse.

Colorectal screenings are now encouraged beginning at age 45. Don’t delay, take charge of your health and talk to your health care provider about scheduling a diagnostic screening today.

The affordability of and access to health care is limited for most of Honduras. The need for certain procedures, like knee replacements, is great.

Dr. Stephen Smith, a member of the Piedmont Clinic, is trying to do his part to fill that need. He recently returned from a medical mission trip to Honduras, where he and a team performed 35 knee replacements. The organization behind the trip, One World Surgery, has a wait list of thousands of people.

Piedmont Atlanta proudly donates critical medical supplies in support of these biannual mission trips.

Grade-school teacher Tomekia thought she was living right—exercising regularly, consciously eating healthier, fasting, and praying—so she never imagined having a terrible headache meant she was having a stroke. But when the headache didn’t improve and she started experiencing left-side weakness, she went to Piedmont Eastside's ER. The ER team immediately recognized her symptoms and gave her lifesaving treatment.
But what caused a stroke in an otherwise healthy woman? The cardiac team at Piedmont Heart Lawrenceville told her: Tomekia had had an undiagnosed hole in her heart since birth and needed surgery.

Even after her pain, her rush to the hospital, and her heart surgery, if you ask Tomekia about her ordeal, her first response is "God is so good, even on a bad day.” When she felt fear, Piedmont cardiologist Dr. Rowe reassured her. She says, “From the moment I walked into his office, he and his team were amazing. His bedside manners are impeccable. There wasn't a time during or after where I didn't have complete trust in him.”
Tomekia’s family, friends, and coworkers provided an incredible support system, but she also praises her care team at Piedmont. “From the moment I rolled in until the day I was discharged, everyone—the nurses, the doctors, the techs, the therapists and the dietitians—made my healing journey better.” And her strong faith sustained her through the days when she needed grace and encouragement.

“I ask God daily in my morning prayers and meditation to be used as a vessel and to help me to ‘Live with Purpose, on Purpose, for His Purpose,’” she says. “That was the moment that I began my healing journey. It’s part of my purpose to share my testimony with great hopes to help others in this journey called life.” We’re so glad we provided the quality care Tomeika needed so she can continue to live her purpose.

During his annual physical this year, Chuck Rawlins told his Piedmont primary care doctor at Eastside Crossing about his family history of heart disease—his dad died of a heart attack, and his mom had one but survived. Even though Chuck had no symptoms, his doctor recommended a coronary calcium scan at Piedmont Walton.

The scan revealed that Chuck had a near-total blockage of the largest heart artery, also known as the “widowmaker” because of its lethality. Chuck’s primary care physician quickly referred him to Piedmont Heart, and he underwent coronary artery bypass graft surgery at Piedmont Atlanta. Chuck is back on his feet with the help of the recent cardiac rehabilitation he received at Piedmont Newton.

Today, Chuck is thankful for the prompt and highly integrated care he received when he needed it most, and he is thankful he remained committed to scheduling his annual physical, or the outcome may have been very different.

It's time to take charge of your health with hassle-free annual physicals close to home. Book today via Piedmont MyChart, online at piedmont.org or by calling your provider’s office directly.

Members of the North Augusta Sertoma Club recently toured Piedmont Augusta’s Speech and Hearing Center and heard firsthand how their generosity has changed lives.

Two recipients of hearing aids from this program were on site to tell their stories. Hunter Kaney recently graduated from Aiken Technical College and now works at the Savannah River Nuclear Energy Site, and Erick Bautista is studying architecture and engineering technology at Augusta Technical College and working as a superintendent in his family’s remodeling business. Both young men are thriving thanks to the generous gift of hearing provided by the North Augusta Sertoma Club. We are proud to partner with them to make a positive difference in the lives of those in our community.

When Tunisia discovered a lump in her breast, her former doctors brushed it off as a side effect from a vaccine. Two years later, she found a second lump and demanded a biopsy. She was diagnosed with cancer—but she had lost her trust in the medical community.

Then she came to Piedmont and met the surgeon who changed her mind. “I thought, ‘This person actually cares about me and really understands what I'm going through.’ I’d been thinking that nobody cared, because that’s what my experience was.”
Tunisia decided to “fight cancer with fashion” and turned her chemo sessions into a fashion show. For each appointment, she walked an imaginary runway into the treatment room, with friends and family helping her coordinate outfits, carry bags, and document the experience. “Instead of dreading chemo, I was looking forward to it because I’d be shopping, looking for my outfits; trying to pull it all together.”

Her vibrant energy uplifted the medical team and fellow patients. “It made everybody happier because [chemo] can be sad and traumatic. But when I came in … people could focus on something else for a little bit. I was able to shift the energy for everybody. I changed to the best version of me,” she says. And it all started with care that made a positive difference in her life.

Our Story

University Health Care System is anchored by the 812-bed University Hospital, and serves Augusta-Richmond County and the surrounding region. University Hospital is governed by the Board of Trustees of University Health Services, which serves voluntarily to help ensure that our patients have quality medical services. Founded in 1818 as City Hospital, the hospital was first located on the 100 block of Greene Street. University has since moved through four facilities to its present location, which opened in 1970. Over the years, the campus has expanded to include the Heart & Vascular Institute, our Summerville campus, University Hospital McDuffie and office buildings that house more than 600 private practice physicians and various treatment centers. University has a long history as a leader in delivering cardiovascular, cancer and women's services. We developed the area's first outpatient cardiac catheterization and performed the region's first angioplasty. We opened the area's first Breast Health Center and put the area's first Mobile Mammography Unit on the road, giving more women in our community access to breast cancer screening. Our W.G. Watson, M.D., Women's Center features 36 obstetrical suites and state-of-the-art surgical suites dedicated for obstetrical and gynecological patients. The center has a well-baby nursery and a 40-bed Level III Special Care Nursery offering neonatal intensive care to our smallest and most critically ill infants. The Heart & Vascular Institute, a 188,000-square-foot cardiovascular center with 72 universal inpatient suites, is the largest, most comprehensive center of its kind in the region and offers a full range of heart and vascular care, from diagnosis to rehabilitation. Recognizing the need to serve more of the community closer to home, University has established medical centers in South Richmond County, North Augusta, Aiken and expanded services in Columbia County to include medical office buildings, a joint-venture diagnostic imaging center, a skilled nursing facility, a joint venture Day Surgery Center and Prompt Care facilities.

University is accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC), which is an independent, not-for-profit organization, established more than 50 years ago. The Joint Commission is governed by a board that includes physicians, nurses and consumers. The Joint Commission sets the standards by which health care quality is measured in America and around the world.
