I recently returned from a trip to Maui and visited Lahaina, a bustling beach town now, but once was the residence of Hawaiian royalty. While there, I stumbled across an interesting placard along the shoreline, detailing the history and sacredness of a certain stone found just a few feet away. Despite its unique shape, at first glance it seems like just another large stone thrown in with the others along the beach, but to the indigenous people of Hawaii, this stone held great significance. It is called “Pohaku O Hauola”, which loosely means extending life and health. In the 14th and 15th centuries, royal chiefesses would birth their babies on this rock, and in later times, it was believed to have healing powers. It was amazing to stand there and contemplate all that that rock had been the center of.
