This study explores how the volume of pediatric cases handled by EMS agencies influences the quality of care delivered. Researchers analyzed over 3.4 million pediatric encounters across 7,104 EMS agencies nationwide. The study found that higher pediatric call volumes were associated with improved adherence to several pediatric-specific quality measures, including timely administration of medications for asthma, anaphylaxis, and seizures.
Interestingly, while higher-volume agencies generally performed better on many benchmarks, the study also revealed areas where volume had no effect or did not demonstrate a negative association. For example, pain improvement in trauma cases was inversely related to volume, and no significant association was found for the management of hypoglycemia, hypotension, or pain assessment. These findings suggest that while experience matters, it is not the sole determinant of care quality.
