Ever wonder how the body uses sugar for energy? 💕🐾

Pink Panther is here to help explain! Insulin acts like a bridge—helping sugar move from the bloodstream into the cells where it’s used for energy, while also signaling the liver to stop making extra sugar. 🚦✨

This page is from A First Book for Understanding Diabetes, part of our Pink Panther book series that helps kids (and grown-ups!) learn about diabetes in a friendly, approachable way.

We’re proud to share an important milestone at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes.

The first participant has been enrolled in a pediatric clinical study evaluating inhaled insulin for youth newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Research like this reflects the leadership and innovation happening within BDC’s Pediatric Division — and reinforces why continued support for the Center matters.

We’re grateful to the patients, families, clinicians, and researchers advancing care through clinical research.

Advocate Spotlight! 💙 Meet Hailey! Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just 2 years old, she’s now in 8th grade and getting ready for high school this fall. Hailey stays busy with volleyball, softball, swimming, academic decathlon, beta club—and her true passion, theater! 🎭✨ She also loves reading and creating art.

The hardest part of T1D? Constantly watching her blood sugars and remembering to change her insulin pump. The best part? Meeting amazing friends in the diabetes community and going to diabetes camp. 💙

Hailey wishes everyone understood that type 1 diabetes is not something she will ever “grow out of.” As an advocate for CDF, she participates in events and fundraisers throughout the year, helping others better understand the complexity of this disease. Nearly twelve years after her diagnosis, diabetes hasn’t slowed her down—learning to think like a pancreas has become her superpower! 💪✨
