The past week has been emotionally tough for so many people, with fear and anxiety about the future running high. I want to encourage people to take a moment to pause and challenge any distorted thoughts they may be experiencing. By examining the evidence behind emotionally distorted thoughts, we can begin to question the accuracy and replace them with healthier, more balanced alternatives. This simple practice can help bring clarity and peace of mind. 🧘‍♀️🪷 🖤 🖤

So much truth….. This talk on addiction by Tara Brach is one of the best I’ve heard in a long time.

Bill Moyers who for 12 years has been free of crack and alcohol, was invited to speak at the M.I.T. conference. In a room full of scientists and addiction researchers obsessed with the intricacies of the human brain, Moyers read a lecture that reminded them that treating addiction might be even more complicated than they thought. He said......

"I have an illness with origins in the brain...but I also suffered with the other component of this illness," he told the gathered researchers and scientists, some of whom dutifully took notes. "I was born with what I like to call a hole in my soul...A pain that came from the reality that I just wasn't good enough. That I wasn't deserving enough. That if you weren't paying attention to me you didn't like me."
The conference room was as quiet as it had been all day. "For us addicts," he continued, "recovery is more than just taking a pill or maybe getting a shot...recovery is also about the spirit, about dealing with that hole in the soul."

Many of us up in homes where a parent turned a blind eye to abuse.

As children, we internalize a deep belief that we’re not worth being protected. That something is inherently wrong because a parent didn’t step up and say “that’s not ok, and I won’t anyone to hurt you physically or emotionally.”

The truth is: lack of protection is a generational cycle. One where adults dissociate and/or deny what’s happening to cope.

Protection is incredibly important for the healthy development of self. We need to witness adults who set clear boundaries, who assert themselves when needed, and who don’t please or appease to avoid the wrath of another person.

If you weren’t protected as a child, it’s not because of something you did. Or who you were. It’s a response— a response to the failure of an adult to understand what your needs were.

A response to existing in a world where domestic emotional abuse and neglect is so normalized, many people don’t even know it’s happening. And on a deeper level, don’t understand the lifelong impact on a persons psyche and physical health.

Break the cycle. Be the person you needed for yourself— your own protector, advocate, and compassionate friend

Perfectly Fine

After all this time, after all the practice I’ve had perfecting what should by now be perfected, I still don’t do it—anything—perfectly right. I am a perfect example of imperfection, and I’m perfectly fine with that.

Perfection is an overrated and impossible goal—in fact, the act of chasing perfection makes perfect imperfect. Perfectionism sucks all the fun out of giving life a whirl.

Perfectionism is not a happy road to follow; it is harsh and demanding, full of judgment and fear. Excellence is my goal. I am on a journey, and I plan to enjoy myself, even laugh at myself—my quirks and silly habits, my screwups and flubs—along the way. Adaptable effort, patience, and reasonable expectations are my mainstays—self-acceptance and a love of this glorious mess that I am are key.

After all this time, after all the practice you’ve had perfecting what should by now be perfected, you still don’t do it—anything—perfectly right either. You—my friends and family—are also perfect examples of imperfection, and I’m perfectly fine with the glorious messes that you are too.

If parents set limits on the time and content of their kids’ video games, the kids tended to get better sleep, gain less weight, get better grades, and display more prosocial behavior and less aggression, as rated by their teachers (JAMA Pediatrics, Vol. 168, No. 5, 2014).
“One simple thing—setting limits on amount and content of your children’s media—influences all of that,” Gentile said.

Cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness training are promising treatments for problem gaming.

Setting boundaries is tough but essential. Learn to say “No” confidently and understand that it is in of itself a perfectly acceptable answer. You don't owe anyone an explanation for your decisions. It's time to stop people-pleasing and prioritize self-care by setting boundaries and saying no. 🙌

Relationship boundaries can play a big role in your mental health. Follow this guidance to set and maintain healthy boundaries with everyone in your life.
