At Victoria Emergency Associates (VEA) and Victoria Hospitalist Associates (VHA), founded by Dr. Jim Brand, we believe exceptional patient care starts with caring for our clinicians in mind, body, and spirit.

Each year, our teams travel to Cozumel, Mexico for a weeklong professional development retreat. It is more than just a getaway. It is a dedicated time to invest in Mental, Physical, and Professional Longevity so our team can recharge and refocus on our purpose.

Through wellness workshops, leadership discussions, and open roundtables, we strengthen not only our clinical skills but also our connections with one another. Whether scuba diving in crystal waters, walking the beach at sunset, or sharing experiences, this retreat reflects who we are: physician led, clinician owned, and family driven.

This is not just a break from the hospital. It is a recommitment to the kind of care we bring back to our patients.

We’re proud to highlight Dr. Fred Martin, who has been with Victoria Emergency Associates (VEA) since the very beginning.

Dr. Martin earned his medical degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), where he also completed his family practice residency, after finishing his undergraduate studies at St. Mary's University in San Antonio.

With nearly three decades of experience as a full-time emergency physician, he spent many years at VEA’s original site, DeTar Navarro in Victoria, and now cares for patients at Yoakum and DeTar North. He values VEA’s physician-focused culture, where doctors are respected and have a voice, a welcome contrast to more corporate environments.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Martin enjoys time with his wife, Irma, their children, and grandchildren. Thank you, Dr. Martin, for your loyalty and dedicated service.

Former director Benjamin Walrath, current director Zander Smith, M.D., associate director Missy Schmidt, and lead APP Yusef Ghamarian have each played a key role in bringing the ER and nursing teams together. Their leadership and dedication drove the improvements that earned this recognition.

Kristen has been part of the VEA team for three years, making a lasting impact on her patients and colleagues with her care and professionalism.

Based in Bay City, she is known for her commitment to both patient care and teamwork. Kristen studied at the University of Texas Medical Branch, bringing that foundation into the work she continues to do today.
