Clinician Spotlight:

Meet Andrés “Cito” Vasconcellos, MD, FACEP, an outstanding emergency physician with an extraordinary story.

Before medicine, Cito was an elite swimmer. He was an All American at USC, competed on the Ecuadorian National Swimming Team, earned two bronze medals at the 1996 South American Games, and set the national record in the 100 meter butterfly, which stood for 25 years. He went on to earn his MD from the University of Wisconsin Madison and completed his emergency medicine residency at Baystate Medical Center.

Cito often shares that what makes VEA special is the people, the teamwork, and the strong clinical support that allows physicians to focus on great patient care.

We are proud to spotlight Cito and grateful to have him on our team.

It was a wonderful evening of connection, collaboration, and learning, and we’re thankful to have been a part of it.

Avery Acker, MD spoke with residents about her experience completing her Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and her path to joining Victoria Emergency Associates (she wanted to pursue her career with an independent, physician-owned organization).

We are truly grateful for the incredible work you do every day and the difference you make in our communities.

Dr. Todd Francis, Medical Director at DeTar Hospital Navarro, is reminding our community that the holiday season brings an increased risk of stroke. The added stress, busy schedules, and changes in routine can impact your heart and overall well-being.

“During this busy time of year, it’s important to give yourself time to sleep and rejuvenate and to be mindful when eating and drinking to reduce your risk of an unexpected visit to the ER. Balance indulgent treats with healthy choices, stay active, connect with friends and family, and make sure you know the signs and symptoms of stroke."

Knowing the signs of stroke is critical.

Dr. Francis advises everyone to remember the acronym F-A-S-T to recognize the signs of a stroke:

Face drooping – Does one side of the face droop or feel numb? Ask the person to smile and see if it’s uneven.

Arm weakness – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

Speech difficulty – Is speech slurred or difficult to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence.

Time to call 9-1-1 – If you observe any of these symptoms, call 9-1-1 immediately. The quicker you act, the better the chance of reducing long-term effects.

We’re excited to spotlight Dr. Nathan Bradley for his outstanding patient care and leadership at Victoria Emergency Associates.

From the moment he joined upon completion of an ultrasound fellowship, he stood out for his commitment to excellence and his genuine connection with patients. Dr. Bradley also chairs VEA’s internal Peer Review Committee and audit activities.

Dr. Bradley recalls meeting with our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Nurani Kester, and how it reinforced the importance of working with people and an organization that shares your values.

We are grateful for Dr. Bradley’s dedication and passion. We appreciate all he does for VEA and the communities we serve!
