Do you want to start your own private practice but have no idea where to start? SAVE THIS POST! 💌

1️⃣ Form a business entity: look up your state's rules for which of the 6 most common entities (sole proprietorship, general partnership, limited partnership, LLC, C corporation or S corporation) you should form - every state has different rules!
2️⃣ Develop a legal business name: you can get creative or just name it after you - it doesn't matter! You just need a name to file everything under. You can always change it later!
3️⃣ Group NPI number: practitioners have their own individual NPI number, but you need to acquire a group NPI number for tax and potential claim filing purposes.
4️⃣ Business EIN: EIN's are for tax reporting purposes, and your practice absolutely needs one to be able to function legally!
5️⃣ HIPAA secure email & documentation storage: this is very important! There are SO many affordable options out there too (we use - they're a great, simple, and very affordable option! 🚨Use our discount code below)
6️⃣ Business bank account: legally, you have to keep your money separate from your business's money. This is an essential step, and it also keeps tracking your business's finances so much easier!

Who else freezes when they don't know what to say sometimes?! 🥶

It is so very important for children who stutter to receive these messages from parents, educators, and even their peers!

✅ Stuttering is something to be celebrated, so don't be afraid to talk about it with them
✅ Make sure the child KNOWS their words are important
✅ Educate others in their community about stuttering and how to approach discussing stuttering
✅ Let them know their speech is special

Do your part to support children who stutter in your home, classroom, community by adding these phrases into your repertoire when communicating with them! 💬

𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗵-𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗧𝗛 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀.

The racial gap in speech-language pathology is no secret, but the actual data is harrowing. That is why it is of utmost importance for all of us as SLPs to support our Black SLP colleagues, encourage and mentor aspiring Black SLPs, and be sure we are doing our part to best serve our Black clients.

It is not just our hope, but we urge all SLPs to 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 to educate yourselves, make your materials more inclusive, and support Black SLPs and Black-owned businesses, so we can make our field more inclusive. DONT let your momentum stop with the end of the month - celebrate and honor Black History every month!

⭐️PRO TIPS⭐️ to IMPROVE your picky eater’s language around food

Try modeling NEUTRAL LANGUAGE around food & RECASTING the negative language they use around food with the neutral language!

But why though...🤔

This language contributes to children putting food into 2 categories:
1️⃣ food that's "good"
2️⃣ food that's "bad"

👉🏻The use of 𝗡𝗘𝗨𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗟 language allows children to internalize more 𝗻𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 feelings around food!

REMEMBER❗️children pick up on the language adults use around them & internalize the messages associated with that language too

Try modeling the phrases above & ones like these instead:

HINT🤫: If your picky eater is already deep into the negative language around food game, you can *𝐬𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭* that they say the desired neutral language instead:
👶🏽: “Ew! I don’t like avocado!”
🙎🏻‍♀️: “Let’s try saying, ‘my mouth isn’t ready for avocado yet‘ instead of saying we don’t like it."

Disclaimer: 𝘌𝘝𝘌𝘙𝘠 𝘓𝘌𝘈𝘙𝘕𝘌𝘙 𝘐𝘚 𝘋𝘐𝘍𝘍𝘌𝘙𝘌𝘕𝘛 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘦, 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮!

But this is the general progression for the step-by-step how to teach a ✨new sound:

1️⃣ Isolation: focus on getting 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 & saying the JUST the sound
2️⃣ Syllables: put a vowel in front of the sound ("uh𝐤") or behind the sound ("𝐤ee") - see which one the child does better with & go from there!
3️⃣ One syllable: consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) refers to the 𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗗𝗨𝗔𝗟 𝗦𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗦 (aka "phonemes") in the word, NOT the actual letters, so "buc𝐤," although spelled CVCC is pronounced "b" / "uh" / "𝐜𝐤" CVC
4️⃣ Multisyllabic: instead of the individual sounds (phonemes) in the word, now you're focusing on 𝗦𝗬𝗟𝗟𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘𝗦. Start with 2 syllables ("awa𝐤e") & move up as progress is made! (3 = "𝐤angaroo," 4 = "𝐤indergarten")
5️⃣ Phrases: keep it 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 (2-3 words) & play around with 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 you place target word in the phrase ("𝐤eep going!" "that is 𝐜ool")
6️⃣ Rotating sentences: use the 𝗦𝗔𝗠𝗘 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗵𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗲 (ex: "he got a...") & rotate the target words into that phrase (ex: "he got a 𝐤𝐞𝐲", "he got a 𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐬", "he got a 𝐤𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧", etc)
7️⃣ Unique sentences: now change up the sentences & play around with where you put the target words within the sentences!
8️⃣ Stories/conversations: even if a child cannot yet read, you can & should choose stories & center conversations around 𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱! This gradually teaches them to monitor themselves with larger discourse

Fa la la la la la la la la-te talker words & how to use them while opening presents!

Remember:
🎁 Keep your 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 - short 1-3 word phrases!
🎁 Use 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 to keep your child interested
🎁 Get 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 on your child's level
🎁 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘇𝗲 the content word you want your child to say
🎁 REPEAT, REPEAT, 𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗧!

Phrases to use with content words when opening presents:
🎄 "Open present"
🎄 "Play ball" (or any toy name)
🎄 "More presents"
🎄 "All done playing"
🎄 *gesture* "Mine!"
🎄 "Toy out"
🎄 "Give present"
