What goes up might come down ⛑️

Newborns can roll unintentionally, even when placed on a changing table. So parents must be EXTRA vigilant when very small children are resting or playing on elevated surfaces, even at the doctor’s office.

If you find yourself getting distracted, consider moving your child somewhere else, holding them in your lap or placing them in an infant carrier instead. If using a carrier, make sure your child is strapped in and the carrier is placed on a flat and sturdy surface.

For this doc, sports are more than a career. They're a passion🏅⚾️

Dr. Nicholas Stetkevich is a sports medicine physician and former collegiate baseball player, which gives him great on-field experience to care expertly for young athletes.

Make sure your athlete follows along to minimize injury risk this fall. But, if they do get hurt, our Orthopedics & Sports Medicine department is always here to help, and virtual appointments are available through Texas Children's Virtual Care. 💪

September is Newborn Screening Awareness Month. ❤️ Every baby deserves the best start in life, and newborn screening helps make that possible.

With a simple test in the first days after birth, doctors can detect rare but serious conditions early—often before symptoms appear. Early detection means timely care, better outcomes, and healthier futures.

At Texas Children’s, we’re committed to supporting families every step of the way, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Newborn screening saves thousands of lives every year.

With a simple heel prick test, we can identify a variety of rare but serious conditions—things like metabolic disorders, hormone problems, or genetic diseases—conditions you might not notice until side effects begin to appear.

Here are some things we think all parents-to-be should know about these screenings:

🙋🏽‍♀️ Ask your birth provider about when and how your baby’s newborn screening will be done.

🧑‍⚕️ Follow up if you don’t hear about results. Usually, no news is good news—but it’s always okay to ask.

🔬 If your baby needs a repeat test or follow-up, try not to panic. Many times it just means the first sample wasn’t clear enough—not that anything is wrong. But timing matters, so do follow up quickly.

Newborn screenings are just one way you can help take care of your new baby. If you want the support and guidance of a physician 24/7, our concierge program might be a great fit. Learn more at our link: https://www.texaschildrens.org/concierge-medicine

All minds are capable of learning, even if they do so in different ways 🧠

Learning disabilities affect about 10% of people in the US, making them more common than you might think. Some of the most well-known include dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia. These (and related) conditions often face unfair stigmas, so we’re here to set the record straight.

If you're concerned about your child's learning, don’t hesitate to connect with our team. You can learn more about the services we offer at the link here: http://ms.spr.ly/6186sYkwy 📝

After-school schedule already overflowing? ⚽️ 🎨 🎺

With class back in session, the start of the year can feel like a whirlwind, begging the question of whether adding more activities to your kid’s plate is a good idea.

But Dr. Tate, one of our pediatric behavioral health specialists, says that clubs and sports can be a fantastic way to build friendships in a structured environment. And if your child feels a little unsure, bringing a buddy along is always a great idea 🤸

Before you swipe: this post touches on challenging topics that may be upsetting. Please read with care.

Su***de prevention is a difficult subject to discuss with anyone, but especially children. Dr. Hayden Mbroh answers a few of our questions above and offers practical strategies for approaching the topic in a healthy manner. She emphasizes the importance of building a foundation of trust and open communication with your child early, fostering healthy emotional habits as they grow.

If you or anyone you know is struggling, dial 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. Our pediatric psychology team is also here to help. ❤️
