Parent coaching is essential for generalization of key strategies from therapy to home, and to better understand why your child is communicating the way they are.

What is “Theory of Mind” (ToM)? Essentially, ToM is the ability to attribute mental states to ourselves and others, serving as one of the foundational elements for social interaction.
When reading about ToM, many tend to believe that it’s a complex skill that we can only work on once children can talk about taking the perspective of another. Yet, some forms of perspective taking are actually present from the beginning of language development! For this reason, I like to incorporate this activity early on with my kiddos.
The activity described on the second picture is designed to address single vocabulary words (as opposed to more complex scenarios) that require the child to attribute intentions and mental states to others. Someone with a lollipop in their hand, for example, might be ‘giving,’ ‘taking’, or ‘showing’ the lollipop – it all depends on the intentions your child can infer from context. Have your child point to the picture that matches the sentences you say aloud, and, if possible talk about how you can infer intentions from context (i.e., note their facial expressions, their hand gestures, the objects the character may have, etc.).

The more words a child is exposed to, the more words they’ll know!
Now that you have your child’s “power words”, start incorporating them into play. I like to use thematic play schemes during my language therapy sessions as this provides a natural way to teach and increase awareness of categories which aids in semantic networking, word retrieval and of course language development. If I’m focusing on farm animals, I will incorporate sheep, cows, pigs, etc.. Now I’ve naturally created a scheme for farm animals without having to “teach” the category. You can incorporate 2+ word phrases into the play scheme using those “power words”, ex. “bye pig!”, “uh-oh piggy!”, “my cow”, etc.
Here are a few activities to begin your thematic therapy session:
~ thematic books: always choose a book related to your theme
~ thematic songs: add fine and gross motor skills to do whole-body learning!
~ play activity (think theme based toys, such as farm animals, cars, food, etc.)
~ craft/art project
~ drill (structured, more adult-led activity): think sorting colors, animals, by food etc.
What type of activities have you incorporated into your thematic therapy sessions?

Is your toddler's vocabulary limited? Are they having a difficult time expanding their utterances? Are they showing difficulty expressing their personal thoughts and feelings?
Incorporate a child-led play session with some of these strategies!

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated to raise awareness about breastfeeding. It is observed from August 1-7th. Read on to know more about how SLPs can assist families in meeting their goals.
A baby's feeding difficulties can shape the mother's lactation success, which can in turn affect outcomes for the baby. As a trained Feeding Therapist, I can assess not only your baby’s bottle-feedings but also their oral motor skills during breastfeeding sessions. I look for muscle tone, tongue movement, coordination of nutrititve sucking/swallowing/breathing (SSB), etc.
There is more to breastfeeding than the amount of milk you make! Let’s work together!

Having a child with feeding issues is one of the hardest problems to handle both for therapists and parents, and it's stressful for the child as well. Our lives often revolve around food! And so does healthy growth and development.
Although eating is seen as a fairly automatic tasks for most of us, it’s actually very involved. It requires tongue lateralization, tongue elevation, jaw strength, rhythmic chewing, coordination, etc.. These are a few of the core oral motor skills needed for safe eating.
In my experience, many children know that they can’t handle the food, so they refuse it as a self-defense mechanism.
The sensory spectrum is a complex one, but typically I see sensory food aversions present in one of two ways (or again, sometimes a combination of them):
- Hypo-sensitivities (little to no oral awareness)
- Hyper-sensitivities (too much oral awareness)
When working with oral sensory aversions, I don't ask children to eat the food right away. I do, however, provide them the safe space to become comfortable with food through play. Let them manipulate food by making faces out of it, smashing it, rolling, drawing, stacking, etc. Your OT can also provide sensory strategies to help get your child ready to accept new foods.
Is your child showing deficits in any of these areas? Schedule a FREE 15-minute screener to discuss if further evaluation is needed.
