Meet Kelsey!

Kelsey will be completing her Level IIB to Capstone occupational therapy fieldwork rotations with us for a total of 3 semesters over the next year. We are honored that she chose us to explore a specialized and emerging practice area as a student. If you are working with us, you will be seeing her, so come say hi!

A little bit about Kelsey:
Kelsey was born and raised in Southern California. She attended Westmont College and became a teacher. After three years of teaching, she decided to change careers and pursue her doctorate in occupational therapy at the University of Southern California. Kelsey has a big heart for infant development and maternal health. When she is not at the clinic, she enjoys cooking/ baking, traveling, taking care of her plants, working out, going on walks/ hikes, watching movies, going to concerts, and spending quality time with family and friends!

Polls are still open for Best In Birth Austin! Vote for Matrescence OT in Occupational Therapy ( #22) and Dr. Sel Unite in Pediatric Medical Provider ( #16) until Monday, September 16th! Link in bio.

We were both OTs before we became mothers. Though each of us had a very different experience through pregnancy, birth, and the first year of motherhood, we each came to a similar conclusion about the professional support we wished we’d had. We realized we had needed an occupational therapist. Pregnancy, postpartum, the transitions in early motherhood, and even planning to have a family, all require an enormous amount of change. Matrescence, or the physical, physiological, hormonal, psychological, social and even political changes during transitions to and during motherhood, deserve support, respect and attention. We co-founded Matrescence Occupational Therapy in order to provide community-based OT services to support clients in the way we wished we had. We started this practice to fill a gap in maternal, perinatal and infant health and well-being during these incredible developmental phases of a mother’s and infant’s lives.

We provide home and community-based occupational therapy in Austin, TX specializing in maternal health, transitions during motherhood and within the first year of life and infant feeding.

We strive to focus our services on the mother and baby or parent and child dyad, and collaborate with our families of practical solutions that make a difference to daily life, health and well-being. This includes among other things:

Infant feeding: Breastfeeding, lactation, bottle-feeding, transitions to solid foods

Maternal health: Depression, anxiety, mood and body changes, PMADs

Transitions: Preconception, preparing for baby, healing postpartum, going back to work, developmental milestones

Last week we visited The Mother’s Milk Bank in Austin for a tour of the facility with two of our future OT students! Aside from the amazing work that Mother’s Milk Bank is doing for babies in our community, they also receive donations and ship milk all over the country to babies in need of an extra boost.

Special thanks to Executive Director, Kim Updegrove and the rest of the milk bank staff who answered every one of our questions and shared the importance of what they do for moms, babies and families through milk donation.

When we first started Matrescence, both of us where at a practical and emotional crossroads in our careers. We were both ready for change and knew that in some ways we wanted to work in the space of motherhood.

We never imagined that we would end up with the opportunity to support mothers, parents and babies at the forefront of their journey and on the frontlines of their first experience with healthcare: at the pediatrician office.

In miraculous fashion, our stars aligned with one pediatrician who wanted to provide more for his families and his practice, particularly in maternal health. As we prepare to open this new chapter for Matrescence and maternal health occupational therapy in primary care, we truly feel this is where we were supposed to be.

More on our journey to come!
