This reality hits like a ton of bricks. The problems and the pain that exists before weight loss are often still present or even worse after. Losing weight is not going to fix your self-esteem, your relationships, or heal your trauma. If your foundation for self-esteem is based on appearance, body size, or weight, that is such a shaky foundation bound to break.

Loving your body is not a prerequisite to body acceptance and body respect. Body respect is a much more helpful goal for those beginning to mend their relationship with their body.

What would your body say if you gave it the chance to speak? Often eating disorders push us to ignore the cues and cries from our body, leading to a disconnect between our brain and body. So what do you think your body is trying to say right now? Would it ask why it is being deprived of nutrients or pushed to exercise past the point of exhaustion? Would it express confusion for what it could have possibly done wrong to be hated so much? Take some time today to begin to repair that connection between your mind and body.
