Mason Shubkagel is a lacrosse and swim athlete who has suffered from knee injuries. Patella instability and a recent meniscal surgery necessitated he go to physical therapy.

Initially, Mason was annoyed with the process. However, Physical Therapist Julie O'Connor challenged and engaged Mason in a way that made the experience more enjoyable. Julie created a personalized, post-operative plan that helped Mason to achieve his goals of driving, walking normally and getting back to full activity with lacrosse and swim.

"Julie has been really great to work with," Mason said. "She pushes me and is fun. Today is my last appointment and I am testing to return to full-contact sport participation."

We are excited to hear you had a positive experience, Mason, and cannot wait to see you back on the field and in the pool! Thank you for choosing us on your rehabilitation journey.

We are proud to bring joy and make the holidays bright!

Team members from Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation Outpatient Therapy recently held their annual Van A Claus Toy Drive. Each year, our 100+ centers decorate giant toy boxes and collect toys to be donated to children within the communities they serve. Our North Texas clinics donate toys to Santa’s Helpers hosted by WFAA channel 8 (9 Years) and our Central Texas clinics donate toys to Blue Santa Organization hosted by Austin Police Department (5 Years).

This year, the staff and patients collected over 3,300 toys. Over 23,000 toys have been donated since 2015. Wow! Way to go, team!

Thanksgiving is a time to pause and reflect, to appreciate the blessings of good health, family, friends and so much more.

This holiday, our heartfelt thanks go out to our patients, colleagues and community.

11/21/2023

AAA estimates 49.1 million people will drive 50 miles or farther from home for Thanksgiving. Being seated in the car for hours can make you stiff and sore.

Physical Therapist and Center Manager Kevin Capata has your back (literally) with advice about the movements you can do inside the car and on pit stops to make your trip as smooth as pumpkin pie.

And if you’re still feeling off after your trip, the good news is that we have more than 1,900 centers across the U.S. so you can reach out for care where and when you need it.

11/20/2023

There’s no place like home for the holidays. Center Manager and Physical Therapist Kevin Capata has advice for everyone who may be stuck on a cramped flight this holiday travel season.

While on the plane: ✈️
✔️ If you aren’t sleeping, eating, reading a book or watching a movie, get up. Walk, stand, stretch and chat with the flight attendants or fellow passengers.
✔️ Wear comfortable and stretchable clothes - no one cares what you look like when traveling. :-) Compression socks are highly recommended.
✔️ If you plan to sleep, pack earplugs and an eye mask and do what you need to set yourself up for success.

Of course, always follow directions from the flight crew and ensure you’re only getting up and moving when allowed.

After you get off the plane: 🧳
✔️ Stretch! Do whatever feels good and get your body into different shapes besides sitting in a chair.
✔️ Elevate your legs. Take 10-20 minutes lying on the ground with your legs elevated on a chair, wall, etc.
✨ Bonus: Exercise. Whether you walk, run or hit the gym, get your heart rate up and blood moving.

There are plenty of options to move your body while traveling to stay happy and healthy and enjoy the holidays.

As summer activities pick up, so does the temperature. That's why it's essential to be aware of the signs and symptoms of a heat cramp.

These muscle spasms typically occur after excessive exercise in hot environments. They can be longer and more painful than regular cramps.

Prevention starts by remaining hydrated while exercising. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and limit vigorous activity outdoors on extremely hot days.

If experiencing pain that may be heat cramps, take these steps:

- Rest and cool down
- Drink clear juice or a sports drink with electrolytes
- Perform gentle stretching or massage to relieve pain

Call a doctor if cramps last longer than an hour.

Do not resume strenuous activities for several hours after the cramps have dissipated.

Knowing your limits will help keep summer fun and pain-free.

Summer create the perfect conditions for insects and the diseases they can carry. To help you and your loved stay safe, check out these tips.

Wear repellant outside to help avoid stings and bites.

Long pants and long-sleeved shirts can work as a great barrier from ticks and mosquito bites.

Avoid standing water in your yard, as mosquitos like to lay eggs there.

Check your skin and hair for ticks after you've been in the woods. Ticks can carry diseases like Lyme and Anaplasmosis, both of which can have deadly consequences if left untreated.

If you do encounter any insect and appear to have an allergic reaction, seek treatment. Symptoms can include hives, nausea, fever or trouble breathing.

Have a safe and insect-free summer!

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Roughly 9,500 people are diagnosed every day according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

One in five Americans will develop skin cancer before age 70, and most skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun.

Ultraviolet lights cause damage to the DNA in skin cells. This can occur from tanning devices as well, which have been known to produce UV radiation in amounts higher than the sun.

Get out there and enjoy the weather, but be sure to always wear sunscreen!

With the summer sun blazing, some families like to head to the beach while others go to their local pool. Whatever your preference, keep these water safety tips in mind.

If you’re boating, always remember to wear a life vest and be cautious of swimming around the propeller.

If you’re at your local beach or even at a destination ocean, be wary of strong currents and know your limits when it comes to swimming.

You should only swim if another person is present, and children should always be supervised when they are in or near the water.
Have a safe summer and remember to wear your sunscreen!
