This was taken from another post on a closed “physician only” site so I am just copying but leaving the original poster anonymous. But it is info we should before we protest our current restrictions.

“Physicians suggesting that “herd immunity” is obtained by letting the virus “run its course” need to stop. It’s dangerous and will result in people believing you and not wearing masks and not social distancing and protesting at state capitals. Stop it.

Any spit ball calculation gets you to millions dead in the US alone if you let COVID “run its course.” Before you suggest mass murder do some basic calculations. here’s one from the back of a napkin. There are 80 million Americans over 60 in the US. 90% would need to become infected for “herd immunity” in that population. So 72 million infections in just the over 60 population. With a death rate of 3% that’s about 2 million dead just in the over 60 population alone. Let’s say I’m totally off on the death rate - even if you cut it in half that is 1 million dead in the over 60 population alone. Now let’s look at the rest of the population there are another 80 million people between 40-60 years old in the US. Let’s say we do an amazing job and only kill off 0.4% of them that is another 320,000 people dead. And for the under 40 population of about 170 million let’s say we only kill 0.1% of them with your herd immunity experiment. That is another 170,000 dead. So in the end Nate you’ve killed off about 2.5 million Americans from COVID and that’s just in the US. How do you think herd immunity is going to look in the 3rd world. Also have you stopped to think that while these 2.5 million people are dying on vents that no one else will get healthcare and the death rate for all other disease will increase. And the economy won’t be “saved” by the deaths of millions of Americans just the opposite. The health of the economy and the health of the America people go hand in hand. It is not the economy or controlling the virus, it is both. You must control the virus to save the economy. And suggesting “herd immunity” is an epically privileged suggestion - if you are relatively young and healthy and have money...herd immunity might sound like not such a bad idea. I’m not cool with killing off the greatest generation that essentially laid down the framework for all the liberties we take for granted everyday. They have already sacrificed enough through world wars and depressions...let’s thank them by stopping this virus and not offering them up as sacrificial lambs. Suggesting herd immunity as a good idea is dangerous and results in people waking around without masks and protesting. Stop it.
