Sherri Scott-Hunter, RN, APN, FNP-C
Nurse Practitioner

Sherri brings a wealth of experience to Austin Ketamine Specialists. She has been a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner for 23 years. For the past 5 years she has dedicated herself to treating patients in Ketamine Infusion clinics in Austin. Sherri received her Master’s of Science in Nursing degree from California State University Long Beach in 1998. Working as a Family Nurse Practitioner, she routinely managed the mental health care and treated patients of all ages with depression and anxiety. She also has experience working in a Psychiatric Emergency Department caring for patients with addiction and crisis. After moving to Austin in 2014, she has used her clinical experience and caring nature to treat over 2000 patients with ketamine infusions.

Sherri is dedicated to treating those with mental health and mood disorders. When not at AKS, she can be found at the VA performing psychiatric evaluations for the wonderful veterans of our armed forces.

In her free time, Sherri keeps active with travel, distance running (she has completed over a dozen half marathons), and yoga. She is currently working towards completing her yoga teaching certification. She believes strongly in the AKS mission, and is passionate about using her unique skill set to make a lasting difference in our patients’ lives. She sees her work as a privilege, and treats each and every patient with compassion and care.

Paul Foster, DO, FACEP
Medical Director/Founder Austin Ketamine Specialists and Houston Ketamine Specialists

Having watched many loved ones and close friends suffer from the incapacitating effects of depression and anxiety, Dr. Foster felt compelled to act. He established Austin Ketamine Specialists with the intention of making safe and effective ketamine therapy accessible to patients facing a wide variety of conditions. Having succeeded in providing the community of Austin, TX with the caring and compassionate relief it needs, Dr. Foster has chosen to expand his practice to the community of Houston, TX.

After serving his country as a member of the US Air Force, Dr. Foster attended Harvard for his undergraduate degree. Recognizing that the modern approach to medicine might be improved upon, he attended Touro University Osteopathic Medicine in California where he earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. This program allowed him to focus on cultivating an integrative and holistic approach to patient care. Dr. Foster then went on to complete his residency in Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in New York City.

Although he was born and raised in Montana, Dr. Foster has called Texas home since 2011. He is a board-certified Emergency Medicine Physician and has worked at emergency rooms throughout the state of Texas. This experience has allowed him to meet and work with individuals from all walks of life, helping him to develop the compassionate and judgment-free approach to care that he has fostered at both clinics. Today, his passion for helping his patients achieve the most fulfilling and wholesome life they possibly can is what propels him and his practice. He truly believes that everyone deserves the chance to live a life unburdened by mental health disorders and chronic pain. Dr. Foster believes that healing is possible, and he is honored by the opportunity to help heal his community.

Ketamine has recently been described as the most important breakthrough in the last fifty years for the treatment of depression, anxiety and chronic pain. It has been used safely and effectively in hospitals worldwide since the 1960’s as an FDA approved anesthetic drug. Numerous articles in medical journals in the last few years have shown efficacy in using ketamine in sub-anesthetic doses to treat depression and some chronic pain syndromes.

Yale University School of Medicine published the first scholarly paper more than 18 years ago showing that tiny doses of ketamine can rapidly relieve depression symptoms when delivered via slow intravenous infusion. Since that time, dozens of subsequent studies conducted by Yale, the National Institute of Health, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Mount Sinai Medical School, Oxford University and more have confirmed these original findings.

Doctors and scientists report that their deeply depressed patients treated with ketamine infusions respond within just a few hours. No other drug used for depression has the ability to bring such rapid relief. With infusions administered in sequential fashion, fundamental brain healing can occur.

Ketamine’s effects are mediated in the brain by interactions with the NMDA receptor, a member of the glutamate receptor family. It interacts with other receptors as well, including opioid and dopamine receptors, and at the AMPA receptor, thought to be an important component of its antidepressant effects.
