Learning about (and identifying with) this personality trait many years ago has been a game changer for me personally. It has freed me from the shame of feeling “too much” or “too sensitive” and has allowed me to increase self-compassion. It is now a passion of mine to educate my clients and people in my life. It’s been a minute since I’ve checked in. My physical body has felt worn down this whole past month, leading to a sense of frustration and disappointment. While acknowledging these feelings toward my body, I shifted my focus to thanking it for allowing me to get out of bed this morning, go for a run and function as a wife, mom and therapist. I then started to notice my body beginning to soften and relax. Sure, it’s important to be kind to yourself but don’t forget that the mind and body are intricately interconnected.

Many of us can probably think back to a time when we have been gaslit. When this happens, our limbic system takes over, our fight-or-flight (or freeze) response kicks in and we don’t respond quite logically.

Here are some of the common gaslight phrases to watch out for and tips on how to respond.

The “Butterfly Hug” is a simple and easy method that can be used at anytime. While it is often used to process traumatic memories during EMDR, it is also a tool that can aid in self-soothing by activating your parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for calming and relaxing your system.

Bilateral stimulation (BLS) is one of the main elements of Eye Movement Desensitization Therapy (EMDR) therapy. It can also be used, especially at a slower pace, to self-soothe and self-regulate, by activating both sides of our brain.

This step-by-step approach to mindfulness and “responding” to your thoughts/feelings is one of my favorite nuggets of wisdom I like to teach to my clients. I often tell them that even if you’re able to get through the first step, that alone can be powerful. And it’s okay if you find “nurture” to be the hardest step. I’ll share tips later about how to make this part a bit more practical.

Check out the podcast (link in bio) to learn more about this method.
