Good morning! When I was little people used the word claim for dating. Date was a day on the calendar. It was common to be asked ‘who do you claim?’ When I was in the seventh grade this really cute boy came to our school and was in my class. All the girls just loved him but I suppose he noticed that I, being very shy, was not one of his followers. He told one of my friends that he really really liked me. Better than anyone else. I told my friends, ‘but he never even looks at me.’ She relayed the message and he told her that it was because he was already engaged! Oh my Lordy. Seventh grade. I sometimes wonder what happened to him for he was surely a ladies man!
Oh, the drama of grade school! We all looked forward to Valentine’s Day. We decorated boxes with crepe paper. Most were huge! We had huge dreams! I remember one boy’s mother bought him a heart necklace to give to me in the fourth grade. I ran across it in my jewelry box the other day. The gold has long since turned green but the stone which was Ruby still shines bright; as bright as my memory of his mother! She was so sweet and raised a big family in a shotgun style house of three rooms. I took my oldest daughter home to see my parents when she was nine days old. My sister in law and her friend had a shower for us. Somehow the older woman was forgotten and here she came with a gift. “ I knowed Shirley would want me here’ she said! I miss those wonderful
