BirthTribeMama

BirthTribeMama Empowering women through pregnancy, birth and postpartum I love mothering and I'm honored to be a mother of 5 children.

Four of them were born at home, every birth was a celebration, a birth party, release of joy and new beginnings. Through last 15 years, I have being learning and expanding my knowledge of birth and parenting, focusing on natural, wholesome approach, supporting natural ways of mothering. For about 12 years I used to run support groups for mothers in New York, where in non-judgmental atmosphere mothers shared their birth stories, acquired breastfeeding support, babywearing information, discussed topics about attachment parenting, cosleeping, cloth diapers and anything related to holistic, natural lifestyle.Through many years of community building, I realized my true purpose is to be a doula, to help out with those very first stages of motherhood on a very personal level. I see motherhood as a journey that unfolds from the moment of conception, where pregnancy and birth are the bases of motherhood. Through my doula practice, I empower mother to open up to her journey in her full potential, trusting her inner guide and strong body. I provide her with love, support and information needed to make the most wholesome decisions that benefit her growth, as well as growth of her children, relationship with her partner and altogether her whole family.

A fabric womb made by Angélique du Coudray, a French midwife who was commissioned by King Louis XV to reduce infant mortality. From 1760 to 1783, she traveled all over France, visiting poor rural women and sharing her extensive knowledge with them. It is estimated that she trained some 10,000 women.
Du Coudray also invented the first lifesize obstetrical mannequin, for practicing mock births, and published a well-received midwifery textbook

one great reminder, especially for all mothers out there that do.things.all.the.time

“We have a tendency to think in terms of doing and not in terms of being. We think that when we are not doing anything, we are wasting our time. But that is not true. Our time is first of all for us to be. To be what? To be alive, to be peaceful, to be joyful, to be loving. And that is what the world needs most.”

Delayed cord cutting comes with many benefits, and finally it's getting more popular. Talk to your provider and have it on your birth plan.

When I was first attending births in 1984, the obstetric model was to cut the umbilical cord immediately after birth and take the baby away for evaluation and a first bath. This was based on the belief that placental blood flow would increase birth complications for babies.

Even back then, we midwives knew to do it differently - we waited until the placenta stopped pulsating - 10 or more minutes -- before clamping and cutting the cord. Baby’s did great, placentas came out readily, and all was good - even if our methods were considered silly by doctors.

Times change, science has caught up. The midwives were right. We now know that immediate cord cutting, unless there’s a medical emergency that requires it, is not recommended. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists now recommends a delay in umbilical cord clamping for at least 30–60 seconds, and the WHO recommends 2-3 minutes.

The benefits of waiting include:
❣️ Transfer to baby immunoglobulins and stem cells, essential for tissue and organ repair
❣️ Extra iron, which has been shown to prevent iron deficiency in the first year of life
❣️ Possibly reduced risk of hemorrhage and easier placental delivery for mom

While jaundice can develop from delayed cord cutting due to this influx of blood, this type of jaundice is not usually a medical problem. Baby will naturally clear this excess iron with pooping. Your midwife or pediatrician will keep an eye on baby over the first few days to make sure it’s clearing. However, the benefits of delayed cord cutting are more beneficial for baby than the risk of this jaundice.

Unfortunately, immediate cord clamping/cutting are still common practice in hospitals. You have to let your midwife or doctor know that you want to wait, with baby tummy to tummy on you, while you do. I recommend bringing this up with your care provider in advance to ensure that they are on board to do ‘delayed cord clamping and cutting’. Get specific with exactly how long you want baby to be connected to the placenta. Unsure how to advocate for yourself? Want guidance on pregnancy, birth, and newborn care? It's important to pay attention to things like that

I had beautiful pregnancies, births, and nursing experience but damn my anxiety was so so so bad. I wish I would have known what I know now. I have a lot of compassion for the mama I used to be.

This topic came up a lot last week ... birth plan. In general , yes it's a good idea to have one, especially in case if birthing process moves fast. Keep in mind, this is your vision, you as a mother have 100% right to set your boundaries and expectations of people that hold space for you Also remember that sometimes, things can unfold differently than expected. Allow a lot of grace for the whole process. https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ4rPysFXKh/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Pregnant moms are more open to consider home-birth these days. If you are expecting and want o learn more, reach out to your local midwives, solo practitioners or groups, and doulas. There is a growing community supporting homebirths.
" Home-based midwifery can show us how to safely untether low-risk birth care from hospital settings. We call upon providers and payers to urgently adapt our health systems to incorporate home birth as an option. This would decompress hospitals when they need it most and may even improve birth outcomes”

In the era of COVID-19, more health care is being delivered at home. Why can't babies?
