We develop a trauma identity and way of coping as a survival mechanism. We develop ways of relating, behaving and thinking as trauma responses. These are often not the most healthy ways of coping, and therefore get shoved into our shadow as a further way to cope.

Being ashamed and guilty for how you survived your trauma will only traumatize you further and stop/prolong your healing. Meet all your stuff with love and compassion. Let your shadow self know how grateful you are for their protection, that you are here because of them, but you are now safe and can handle if from here.

Once you meet your shadow with love and compassion, you will notice it becoming lighter, you will feel lighter. Your behaviors, ways of thinking and relating will change. Self sabotage will stop. You will be able to start to identify outside of your trauma- you will be able to talk and think about other things in your life.

Shadow work is hard. But it's worth it. Your mental health is worth it.

How to Prevent Burnout: 3 Steps to Identify, Heal and Prevent Burnout.

In our society, it is too often we find ourselves burnt out from work, family, friends, etc. We are required to keep up with so many different things on a daily basis, that it's impossible to do all of them!

Burnout can stem from difficulty saying 'no', fear of saying 'no', lack of boundaries, distrust in others, etc. All of these things allows us to overwork, over compensate, over extend, over promise, etc. This road will always lead to burn out.

1) Traffic Light
So first, you identify. You identify your different phases of burnout- green, yellow and red. You identify how you feel, behave, relate, etc during those different phases. Put it in your notes app on your phone so you always have access to it.

2) Attach coping skills to each phase
Identify coping skills that work best for you in each phase. Sometimes you will have to use all the coping skills to work your way down the traffic light. I.e you are at red, you will need to use red, yellow and green coping skills to heal. The coping skills will become more intense/integrated the higher up on the traffic light you go.

3) Boundary setting
So, you've identified your warning signs and used coping skills to work your way down the burnout traffic light. You're feeling better, but want to ensure you don't have to go through that again, right? Well, now it's important to understand why you struggle with boundaries and how you became burnt out in the first place. By identifying your boundary struggles, you can implement specific boundaries to your needs to prevent future burn out. Your future self will thank you!

Let’s talk about balance:

It’s easier said than done, right?

But did you know that long term wellness is the ability to know and find balance in daily life?

Your shadow is made up of all this pieces of yourself you have been taught to be ashamed of. These pieces of you hide in the dark, and come forward as self sabotaging behaviors.

You are sick of this pattern and ready to break free.

When a person experiences repeated trauma, the nervous system becomes dysregulated, leaving us in a continuous state of fight, flight, fawn and freeze.

This state can be difficult to find calm and safety. The body requires connection and experiencing to learn regulation.

A person can find this through mindfulness, meditation, breath work, exercise and anything that allows the body to connect and shed nervous energy.

Did you know that our trauma impacts our ability to talk with others? That we can repeat the very behaviors we so strongly want to break free from?

Trauma creates patterns in our lives, and often a communication pattern that is created is defensiveness. We tend to become defensive when we believe/perceive that another person is judging or threatening us. Sometimes this is our nervous system in hyperdrive, and not an accurate depiction of our current reality.

Some tips to help are:
1) Take a breath to bring awareness
2) Ask yourself "is this true or is this my trauma?"
3) Orient yourself to the person you are speaking to- is this someone you trust and can believe they are not out to get you?

These tips can help in grounding yourself to the present moment and allow for effective and healthy communication.

Contentedness is being at peace with yourself and your current life/surroundings. That sounds like the balance we all are searching for...

To find contentedness, it's important to learn healthy communication. If we can effectively communicate with one another, we can truly find peace with our lives!

Effective communication:
1) Stating your needs in a clear way
2) Understanding your own bias that can get in the way of your communication
3) Understand the perspective of the other person/being willing to listen
3) Hold firm to your boundaries

These are just a few things to keep in mind when trying to work on your communication style!

Relationships and patterns...

We repeat patterns in our relationships. And our relationships can be the most triggering place for our trauma!

If we didn't have great relationships, experienced trauma, abuse and/or neglect growing up with our caregivers, then we have a high likelihood of repeating those unhealthy patterns in our adult relationships.

Our attachments really do mean something. Attachment style impacts our ability to relate to others.

Everyone's trauma looks different. Trauma is not one size fits all. We call carry and cope with it differently.

Trauma is not something to gate keep. No one can invalidate our trauma- our experiences and perceptions are valid.

Trauma is a maladaptive response to a stressful event where information is stored incorrectly, which creates trauma responses when the mind and body perceive a similar threat.

Sometimes our own minds can be our greatest sabatoger in achieving goals...

We cannot achieve what we do not start or what we do not allow ourselves to go after...

Some tips to help your inner sabatoger:
1) Tell those thoughts "No!" and challenge them
2) Tell yourself the opposite of that initial thought
3) Bring your awareness from your mind and into your body- DO SOMETHING ELSE
4) Have a daily mantra of encouraging words or phrases and begin to rewire your brain

These tips can be done alone or together, but remember that something must be done to shift your current state.
