Texas AFL-CIO

Texas AFL-CIO We’re the state labor federation representing 250,000+ union members. We fight for all Texas workers! We work the early shift and the late shift.

We are teachers, firefighters and farm workers, actors and engineers, pilots and public employees, painters and plumbers, steelworkers and screenwriters, doctors and nurses, stagehands, electricians and more. We are the unemployed, students and retirees. We believe that people who work make Texas work and that together, we are better.

📢 TEXAS WORKER WIN: Harris County commissioners approved a countywide worksite safety policy.

It will prevent injuries, enforce safety standards, and ensure workers can speak up without fear when calling out unsafe practices.

No worker should have to choose between their job and their life.

“They are holding paychecks hostage and the ransom is state employees’ silence.”

Caleb Newton was fired from the Texas Comptroller’s office over a personal TikTok promoting the No Kings Rally.

But we will not roll over. This is about all state employees and their right to free speech!

Tell Greg Abbott: Hands off our free speech!

As Texas AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer-Elect Lorraine Montemayor said, we’re organizing, fighting, and building a bigger labor movement.

Texas workers will never back down against the bullies and the billionaires.

“The number one job of an organizer is to organize yourself out of a job.”

Rick’s time as Texas AFL-CIO President is nearly over, and he’s passing on the baton.

As Leonard and Lorraine step in to lead, Rick knows the Texas labor movement is in capable hands. Solidarity forever! ✊🏽

On November 9, 1935, the Committee for Industrial Organization was formed within the American Federation of Labor (AFL) to expand union membership to industrial workers, women, and Black workers.

The committee broke away from the AFL on April 13, 1938. On November 16, 1938, it officially became the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), and reshaped the American labor movement through its inclusive organizing and the formation of the first political action committee.
