Breast augmentation has a lot of variables, and implant placement is one of the biggest decisions in achieving a natural, balanced outcome. Dr. Reis breaks down the two primary options to help patients understand how anatomy, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals guide this choice.
Submuscular placement, often called dual plane, positions the implant partially under the muscle. This can improve upper pole coverage and reduce visible rippling, but it may not be ideal for patients who are highly active or prone to animation deformity.
Subglandular placement sits the implant on top of the muscle. This avoids muscle disruption, creates fuller cleavage, and can be a strong option for patients with existing breast tissue or post-pregnancy changes. It can also help some patients avoid a lift if the anatomy allows.
