Start teaching them while they’re young that being a physically strong woman is normal and necessary. Children emulate what they see displayed to them, they repeat words they hear, they learn emotional regulation from adults. Imagine managing your stress, improving your bone density, gaining muscle mass and confidence, and speaking positively about yourself in front of a kid? You would equip them for life to overcome challenges.

Do you call yourself fat in front of children?

Do you raise your voice, lose your temper, throw things, curse and use other foul language with littles nearby when you have big feelings?

Do you count yourself out on hard things like lifting weights before you even attempt them because you are “not strong enough?”

Are your kids around to hear you say you need “mommy juice” because it’s been a hard day/week?

Are you at risk of/do you currently have low bone density due to inactivity?

There are other options.

Resistance training is the answer. Weights, Pilates, calisthenics. Find something you like and do it for life. Yours and that of your offspring quite literally depend on it.

Little eyes and ears (girls AND boys) are always tuned in. What are you teaching them?

Hi friends!

Anyone know of a specific organization in Austin to help during the holiday time?

If it is Latino operated, awesome.

But, somewhere that would need donations of any kind whether it’s food, blankets or toys.

THANKS!!

School is about to start, the holidays are around the corner, and perhaps you will say, “it’s too hard right now!”

Trust me, if you can do it when it’s hard, you can do it when it’s easy! Let’s get going NOW.

I have some 1:1 spots open on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings!

I also have some openings for remote training & nutrition coaching!

ALL CUSTOMIZED.

Feel free to share this post with someone who may be a good fit 🙂

When I was about 23, I injured my knee and landed in Dr. Daniel P. Bockmann, DC's office for some rehab. To date, I still remember the exercises he had me do and they continue to help me and my own clients. I saw him over the course of two years for continued aches and pains from being a runner turned lifter and I even filled in for one of his exercise therapists while she went out of town so I got a few days of in-clinic experience.

Dr. Dan was always kind to me and willing to help.

In recent years he was diagnosed with colon cancer and has faced death head on all while documenting the experience on YouTube. Keep in mind that this man was very fit, he ate well, and he had a successful career and cancer did not discriminate.

I think he is either on his way to heaven soon or has already passed, but, his last video is something that I wanted to share with you all. The light in his eyes is still on and he has a gratitude and joie de vivre (a phrase I have tattooed on my shoulder meaning "joy of life") that many of us in "perfect health" do not have.

If you would like to be enlightened by another human being's graciousness and joy even in the midst of being on hospice, I encourage you to watch this. His heart is very visible here and I hope that we all approach our own exit with this much poise if given the chance.

Go peacefully, Dan.

It's been a long, interesting adventure over the past 4 years, but I'm happy where I am, and so grateful that you all have been on this trip with me!Look fo...

I socialized and wore some real clothes over the last three months and got complimented by a little girl in the bathroom (she was no older than 10 and stopped dead in her tracks and said, “Whoa. You are really pretty.” To which I replied while VERY flattered and emotional, “You are really pretty, too!” And she zipped away into the stall) last weekend which made my whole next six months.

I am constantly sweating and coaching so switching it up is really something I enjoy now. I finally made it. 🫶🏼

But also I can’t stop flexing in the mirror 😂 Someday I will be an old and saggy lady nearing the end and I will look back on all these cute outfits and muscles and smile.

If you’re not aware yet, May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Robin Williams, a staple of my childhood, immediately comes to mind. He played, in some age-appropriate-for-me-at-that-time movies (Aladdin, Jumanji, Mrs. Doubtfire, Hook, Fern Gully) a happy character. He made me and an entire generation laugh and smile. Off screen he battled anxiety, depression, and addiction for a number of years which intensified before he, at 63 years old in 2014, made his own exit from earth.

My heart breaks for people like this.

I also empathize with those who struggle in this way. It’s difficult to be despondent for months/years and still need to show up with a smile and a bright attitude only to return to your sad thoughts when alone.

How often do you think to check on your very happy, well-liked, infectious smile having, always able to crack a joke type of friends? Not everyone is covering up a world of sadness, solitude/loneliness, or grief, but some are. Hold space for them to be vulnerable, encourage them to get help, follow up on their attempts to seek said help.

Carrying heavy things doesn’t mean it’s not weighing us down. Strength doesn’t absolve us from needing support. People may cover pain with jokes, excessive busy-ness, alcoholism (which looks normal to the average drinker these days) opioid/substance abuse, excessive exercise, non stop travel, relationship hopping, porn/promiscuity, excess spending/shopping/materialism All of these can indicate someone’s mental and emotional state may not be well. There’s an inability to be still. Or, they may display disinterest in EVERYTHING.

Meet people with compassion, not contempt. Seek to understand them. Showing up authentically gives those who are struggling permission to do the same. You may be the SAFE person that helps them get the assistance they need/the one who finally listens. When they heal, these are the world changers; they ripple out to help others with similar wounds and when they do, it is beautiful.

We all need healing and a soft place to land.
Look closely into people’s eyes; pain and joy can both be detected in a gaze.

Check on your strong friends. Show love for your fellow people.

I hate being labeled as, “bad.”

The word, “obedient” became part of my vocabulary before kindergarten. With that as the expectation and the alternative punishment + criticism, I grew up thinking any deviation from that was unacceptable. With little room for (inevitable) error, I sought excellence (this isn’t inherently negative, the driver is important). I got straight A’s, learned music with ease, was a dedicated athlete, & got into a top school. I became diligent and reliable employee and never meet a stranger. Being a “good girl” my whole life made me a perfectionist and a people-pleaser. Later this carried into my fitness journey.

Recently at my big age of 36, I violated a boundary that any person probably has and I spent two weeks absolutely trashing myself over it because I was reminded of little Monica’s hard wiring to be perfect (although I have worked successfully in other areas- like eating and exercising -to accept 80% and have found happiness). I couldn’t believe I could be so, “bad,” as though all of us aren’t still learning to be human. This is the same guilt folks experience without mindfulness around dieting and exercising.

I see these perfectionistic, people pleasing, morality assigning behaviors working with nutrition coaching clients. People think they eat a burger and suddenly they are this monster of a person because they failed to “eat clean” or stick to their macros. It’s not BAD to like or eat ice cream or to skip a workout. We don’t become “GOOD/BAD” because we made one little trivial mistake or had a human experience in the process of learning a new skill (living a more health promoting lifestyle).

This is the work I get into with people. Fitness and nutrition coaching is so much more than simply assigning foods and movements. There is a lot of psychology involved as we get to the root of the behavior and figure out how to change it at a sustainable pace. It’s rewarding to see people stop berating themselves and start celebrating their wins. It allows people to THRIVE.

If you’re ready to stop fighting yourself as you adopt new practices, I will soon be launching a group program and you don’t want to miss out! Stay tuned :)
