As an Olympic-style weightlifter and dental hygienist, Misty Cox uses her hands a lot. In fact, she developed carpal tunnel syndrome from overuse, which required surgery. Afterward, she turned to Occupational Therapist Hannah Osman at our Lee's Summit North center to work on regaining strength in her hands and wrists.

"My grip strength felt nonexistent, and lifting weights was completely out of the question," Misty said. "However, Hannah made me feel comfortable and more confident in my return to the activities I wanted to do."

Misty said two other physical therapists at a different company referred her to Hannah. "Hannah has been absolutely amazing and a true God-send," Misty said. "I'm so glad I listened and sought her out, as she is a true [asset], not only to Select Physical Therapy but the OT community as a whole."

Misty is still working her way back to lifting weights at full capacity. She has continued to improve her grip strength and add more weight to her workouts.

Your progress is inspiring, Misty. Thank you for trusting us with your care.

March is endometriosis awareness month. Endometriosis is a disease where endometrial like tissue grows in other areas of the body outside the uterus. It impacts 1 in 10 women. Symptoms can vary but often include fatigue, pelvic pain, pain with periods, heavy periods, pain with bowel movements, urinary urgency, pain with s*x and abdominal pain.

Pelvic health physical therapists can help improve the pain associated with endometriosis and healing from endometriosis surgery. Pelvic health physical therapists take a comprehensive approach to musculoskeletal changes in the abdomen, hips, pelvis and back from endometriosis. This approach is coupled with an advanced knowledge of complex pain and its impact on the nervous system.

Managing endometriosis takes a team of dedicated health professionals. Do you have a pelvic health physical therapist on your care team? If not, schedule an appointment with one of our highly skilled, specialty trained pelvic health clinicians.

Artist Lisa Bagley was handed devastating news. She had cancer. The treatments and recovery were debilitating for Lisa. She spent many a day just trying to move from the bed to couch. It was all she had the physical energy for at that point.

As her cancer care was priority, Lisa put all other health issues to the side including her ankle pain. As she recovered, Lisa became eager to focus on resuming physical activity and, of course, her artwork.

Her ankle pain became a barrier to her health journey, though. For Lisa, it hurt to drive, stand, walk and sleep. She felt like she was crippled and could not progress. Lisa sought out help with her goals by going to Select Physical Therapy's Largo center. There, Physical Therapist Koenraad Vandenbroeck tailored a program to get her back on her feet and moving.

"My progress was pretty slow to me, but steady," she said. "It was quite obvious that my ankle was weak when I started."

Lisa worked hard and made great progress under Koenraad's supervision. She had worked with him previously and trusted his goal setting and exercise prescription. This effort paid off.

"I am happy I am able to drive now," she said. "I am so thankful to participate in museum visits again where I can stand in front of a piece and examine all the details without pain."

We are so glad to hear you are back to being independent and visiting museums, Lisa. Thank you for choosing us on your rehabilitation journey.

Mason Shubkagel is a lacrosse and swim athlete who has suffered from knee injuries. Patella instability and a recent meniscal surgery necessitated he go to physical therapy.

Initially, Mason was annoyed with the process. However, Physical Therapist Julie O'Connor challenged and engaged Mason in a way that made the experience more enjoyable. Julie created a personalized, post-operative plan that helped Mason to achieve his goals of driving, walking normally and getting back to full activity with lacrosse and swim.

"Julie has been really great to work with," Mason said. "She pushes me and is fun. Today is my last appointment and I am testing to return to full-contact sport participation."

We are excited to hear you had a positive experience, Mason, and cannot wait to see you back on the field and in the pool! Thank you for choosing us on your rehabilitation journey.
