Do you know the top reasons people visit the ER?
• Abdominal pain and digestive issues
• Chest pain
• Musculoskeletal aches and injuries
• Cuts or superficial wounds

Children often come in with high fevers, ear infections, or abdominal pain, while women may visit for UTIs, headaches, or pregnancy-related concerns.

Go to the ER immediately if you experience:
• Chest pain or trouble breathing
• Stroke symptoms (sudden weakness or slurred speech)
• Severe allergic reaction
• Uncontrolled bleeding, seizures, or poisoning

For non-emergencies, urgent care or your primary care provider may be a better first step. Here is more information for you and your family: https://bit.ly/48zHg4h

For many patients with blood cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, a blood stem cell transplant – made possible by lifesaving donations – is the best option for survival. According to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), 70% of patients who need a blood stem cell transplant don't have a fully matched donor in their family, leading them to rely on the NMDP.

As part of the Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Network, our program at St. David's South Austin Medical Center has served more than 1,000 patients with a bone marrow donor transplant. Thinking about becoming a donor? Here are a few common misconceptions and facts about blood stem cell and bone marrow donation:

❌ Myth: Donation is very painful.
✅ Fact: Discomfort and side effects vary from person to person, but it may be less painful than you think.

❌ Myth: Donation is expensive.
✅ Fact: Donating is free. All of your medical and travel expenses are covered by NMDP, and they can also help cover any lost wages due to donation.

❌ Myth: Only males can donate blood stem cells or bone marrow.
✅ Fact: Anyone between age 18 and 40 who meets the medical requirements can donate, regardless of gender.

You could be a match for someone in need. Learn more and join the registry today at https://bit.ly/4mxROEu

Safe sleep practices are one of the most important ways we can reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and help babies sleep safely and soundly.

Here's a quick reminder of safe sleep practices:
💤 Always place baby on their back for every nap and bedtime
💤 Use a firm, flat mattress in a safety-approved crib
💤 Keep the crib free of blankets, bumpers, toys and pillows
💤 Baby should sleep in the same room, but not the same bed
💤 Dress baby in a sleep sack of footed pajamas to keep cozy

The American Heart Association estimates that over 5 million Americans are living with AFib. Symptoms vary from one person to another, and some people may not have any symptoms at all. Those with AFib have a higher risk of stroke, heart failure and other health concerns. Fortunately, there are a variety of treatment options, which can help reduce the risk.

🫀 Heart Disease Is Changing! While heart attack deaths dropped 89% since 1970, other heart conditions are rising:
• Heart failure ↑ 146%
• High blood pressure-related disease ↑ 106%
• Arrhythmias ↑ 450%

🏥 Dr. Joaquin Cigarroa, an interventional cardiologist at Heart Hospital of Austin, says better treatments save lives — but aging, hypertension, and diabetes are driving new risks.

What you can do:
• Get annual screenings
• Know your family history
• Make lifestyle changes
• Quit smoking — it’s more powerful than any pill

Heart disease has change since the 1970s as surgeries, medications and transplants have people living longer. Lifestyle and age, though, keep us in heart failure.

According to Blood Cancer United, about every three minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma – the most common types of blood cancer. Blood cancer is caused by DNA mutations within blood cells. In most cases, this is linked to factors beyond our control, like age, ethnicity and family history. This Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re answering common questions by sharing the facts shown here.

At St. David's South Austin Medical Center, we are proud to be one of the nine accredited blood cancer treatment programs as a part of the Sarah Cannon Cancer Network. We offer distinct therapies for patients facing different types of blood cancer: autologous transplant, allogenic transplant and CAR T-cell therapy.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with blood cancer, we’re here to help. Find compassionate oncology care: https://www.stdavids.com/specialties/oncology/blood-cancer
