“Accessible South Africa”

After a long drive along the coast, with the steep mountains dropping straight into the beautiful rocky coast of False Bay, we made it to the quaint beach town of Hermanus.

We enjoyed yet another fabulous seafood lunch, this time at The Gecko. The restaurant was cute, staff welcoming and the facilities clean and accessible. All good things for this group!

“Accessible South Africa”

Our day started with a scenic drive southbound along the Atlantic Ocean, taking in beautiful coastal communities with lavish homes, outdoor restaurants, and high-end shopping. In contrast, we drove through very primitive townships.

Two highlights of the day … the drive along Chapman’s Peak Drive to the lighthouse. It was a very cold and drizzly day (especially when we made it to the Cape of Good Hope). The second, a delicious seafood lunch at Seaforth and hanging out with the penguins at Boulder Beach.

“Accessible South Africa”

Started Tuesday (our first day in Cape Town) with a lovely city drive to Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. What an amazing place! These pictures do not do it justice, as the vistas and rock formations were incredible. The weather at the top was the perfect temp for strolling and climbing.

Next stop, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden for a delicious lunch of braised short ribs, chicken tangine, roasted carrots, and much more. A private guided tour of the botanical garden was fabulous.

Ended the day driving on a scenic tour in our fully-accessible vans.

Our experience from London to Johannesburg was excellent from the airport signage, accessibility, and very large and visible staff to provide assistance from curb to plane.

The onboard staff at British Airways could not have been more attentive to those in our group needing assistance with seating, going to the restroom, etc.

Day 3 of our Accessible Portugal adventure was perfect. From the excellent private coach that accommodated several wheelchairs and scooters, the helpful and attentive staff at TourismForAll, a visit to the wonderful Gulbenkian Museum (too many gorgeous artifacts to include in this post), a delicious lunch a Vela Latina (the spinach soup, fish entree, and seafood risotto were fantastic!). After lunch, we visited the coach museum and were amazed at the intricate details and materials used to create these beautiful forms of travel for Portuguese royalty. And a day in Belem would not be complete without a trip to Pasteis de Belem for a delicious custard pastry, the recipe dating back to 1837!
