I used to think self care was taking a bath, going to yoga, eating what is best for my body, or buying a new outfit for work. While all of that is essential for my physical and mental well-being there is more to self care. At times, we all need space for ourselves to calm our nervous system and to clear our perspective. This type of space takes patience, and often we don’t want to sit in the uncomfortable feelings of space.
I worked as a Chief Compliance Officer in the investment industry for over 20 years. There was an incident that required me to report a member of upper management to the owner of the company. It wasn’t an easy thing to do, for I knew the ramifications would be uncomfortable. I did my job, and reported the employee. Afterward, I’d pass him in the halls and he wouldn’t look at me, let alone speak to me. He’d turn his back on me if I ran into him in the staff kitchen area. It made going to work miserable. I met with my counselor and I explained how uncomfortable it was in the office. She said, “Actually, by not talking to you he is giving you space. You too are giving him space by not approaching him further. You know he needs to process his actions. You are providing him space with grace.” I never forgot those words.
Today I use those words as a form of self care. There are times when I interact with others and for whatever reason I need space from them, or they need space from me. In an effort to support a resolution I provide space knowing it’s provided with grace. One tool that has helped me when I am providing space with grace is Tarot. In one sitting I asked Tarot, “How can I be comfortable in the uncomfortableness of providing space with grace?” That led me into self discovery and understanding of myself in a deeper sense.
If you struggle with providing space with grace, or giving yourself permission for self-care, I invite you to contact Ace of Cups and ask for a Tarot reading. Just going once will show you more of who you are, and that is certainly self-care!
Be Well,
Sharon

Visiting Oregon to harvest some winter herbs for our apothecary! The moss is so beautiful, the trees so comforting, the coffee shop made the perfect cappuccino, and waking up in the forest is such a breath of fresh air. Renewed and refreshed are the words that come to mind. I love seeing my plant friends that I don’t get to see in Austin. I love having a community of plants. This is one of the reasons I love to teach people about plants and the gifts they share with us and how we can support the plant world.

We’ve all heard the old adage that “it’s a new year and a new you!” Is a new you necessary? Perhaps the saying should be “it’s a new year and a new journey”. As this year begins, I invite you to start your own journey of self-exploration. I have my own experience, and let me tell you, it’s quite a journey!

I started down an exploration journey, unintentionally, when I was in my early 40s. It wasn’t until I injured myself and started physical therapy that I learned there was more to healing than my physical body. Physical Therapy presented the gateway to massage, acupuncture, meditation, several styles of yoga, oils, spices, and ayurvedic practices for healing. I became aware of these modalities over many years. Each one seemed to lead me to the other, and each one subtly changed me over time. I gained the awareness to ask, “who am I”? That question led me further down the path of exploring my true essence. Both tarot and the enneagram taught me how to observe myself without judgment, so that I could see my inner self. Those insights allowed me to love who I am, and accept others as they are. It’s been over 20 years since I started this lifelong exploration, and I know any path you take will also be life long. The journey to you never ends, and there is no need for a ‘new you’.

I hope 2026 will put you on the path to you. Happy New Year!

Be well, Sharon aka Samantha’s Sister

This week we’re working with mugwort — a dreamy, intuitive herb known for supporting digestion, easing tension, and opening the door to deeper rest and vivid dreams. Sip it as a gentle mugwort tea in the evening and let your nervous system soften. 🌿

For body care, try a slow forward fold. Let your head hang heavy, knees bent if needed, and breathe into the back body. This simple stretch calms the mind, soothes the spine, and invites release.

And don’t forget — it’s Free Week in Austin! There are so many beautiful, community-centered events happening around the city, making it a perfect time to get out, connect, and explore.

Come by Ace to sip, stretch, and settle in.

Earthy, aromatic, and quietly powerful.

Bay leaf is more than a soup staple, she’s a steady, wise herb known for supporting digestion, easing tension, and encouraging clarity and focus. Traditionally, bay has been used to invite protection, prosperity, and success, making her a favorite for both kitchen magic and ritual work.

Energetically, bay leaf is all about intention with patience: clear goals, grounded confidence, and trusting the long game. She reminds us that slow, consistent simmering brings the deepest flavor.

Perfect for this season of reflection and planning, bay adds depth not only to your meals, but to your manifestations too.

Swipe for a simple ritual or kitchen-inspired way to work with bay leaf and bring that calm, focused energy into your day.
