The worldviews of individualism and collectivism are often at the root of various cultural differences that emerge in therapy, particularly when discussing family-related issues. The Individualistic v. Collectivistic Values Continuum Profile developed by Dr. Manuel X. Zamarripa is both a clinical intervention tool with clients and a reflective/training/consultation tool for therapists. Using this tool, we will locate degree of adherence to either individualism or collectivism in regard to several common differences in cultural values/behaviors. The tool explicitly makes use of self-rating on a continuum to help make connections and brides between starkly different worldviews and can be extremely helpfully for situations when the therapeutic process becomes “stuck” due to differing client and therapist values. Given that all societies and people value both individualism and collectivism to varying degrees, but that depending on one’s dominant worldview it can be difficult to identify both values within one’s life, this tool allows the user to construct their own “IC Values Profile”. The Values Continuum will allow us to bring forth cultural and familial strengths that can facilitate healthy connectedness to both family and community from a culturally rooted framework.
2 CEUs will be provided forTexas LPC's, LMFT's, LCSW's and Psychologists. These can be used toward the cultural diversity/competency requirements.
