Folate may be most celebrated for pregnancy, but its impact goes far beyond.

At Neuronutrition Associates, we see how folate influences everything from brain-health to immune resilience, detoxification to cellular repair.

In our new blog, The Folate Connection: Why This Nutrient Matters for Brain and Body Health, we explore:

• How folate supports neurotransmitter production, mood, and focus

• Why standard folate tests can miss dysfunction, and what to check instead

• The vital difference between folic acid and the active forms like methylfolate and folinic acid

• How genetics, inflammation, and gut-health all affect folate utilization
Whether you’re supporting your child’s development, managing brain-fog, or looking to optimise your long-term health, understanding folate is essential.

What looks like behavior… isn’t always behavior.

We recently worked with a family whose daughter suddenly started:

Bedwetting
Aggression
Suicidal thoughts

The shift was overnight.
The mom knew something was off.

They went to the ER, but the symptoms were dismissed and labeled behavioral.

No labs.
No swab.
No investigation.

When she came back to us, we ran one simple test, a strep culture.
It was positive.

After treating the infection + calming inflammation, her symptoms began to improve.

Here’s why I’m sharing this:

Sudden psychiatric or behavioral changes deserve medical curiosity, not dismissal.

If your child suddenly has:
→ New anxiety or OCD
→ Rage or aggression
→ Regression or bedwetting
→“Out-of-character” behavior

Ask for labs.
Ask for a strep test.
Ask why, not just what.
Behavior is communication.

Parents… you are not overreacting.
You are advocating.

One Patient’s Genome: Connecting Parkinson’s, Cognition & Stroke

Date: Friday, November 14
Time: 12:00 PM CST
Cost: Free

Join us for an educational case discussion exploring how genomics can uncover the hidden connections between Parkinson’s, cognitive decline, and stroke risk.

In this session, Dr. Sharon Hausman-Cohen, MD, will present a real-world prevention case where advanced genomic analysis revealed unexpected pathways driving neurodegeneration, and how those insights informed a precision prevention strategy.

This webinar is designed for licensed healthcare providers (MD, DO, NP, PA, PharmD, and DC with functional training) who want to deepen their understanding of genomics in clinical care.

Neuro Nutrients is proud to support education that bridges science and practice to help patients achieve better outcomes.

When hormones shift, so does the nervous system.

Estrogen and progesterone both help regulate neurotransmitters like serotonin and GABA, the same pathways that influence calm, focus, and emotional stability.

So when levels dip (during the luteal phase, postpartum, or perimenopause), it’s not “just stress.”

It’s your biology asking for balance.

Low progesterone can make sleep lighter, thoughts race faster, and the body feel more “on edge.”

Low estrogen can heighten inflammation, reduce serotonin, and shift how your brain processes emotion.

Functional medicine looks beneath the surface, at nutrient status, methylation, gut health, and adrenal rhythm, to understand why the nervous system feels dysregulated, and how to restore calm from the inside out.

Key supports include:

✔ B-vitamins for neurotransmitter synthesis

✔ Magnesium for nervous system regulation

✔ Omega-3s to calm inflammation, when needed bioidentical hormone replacement should be considered

✔ Sleep and stress hygiene to balance cortisol

Because mental health isn’t just emotional, it’s biochemical.

And when we support the body, the mind often follows.

Autism, PANS, and PANDAS are complex conditions, but the why behind them is often where healing begins.

In my recent conversation with Beyond the Basics Health Academy, we explored how environmental triggers, infections, and nutrient imbalances can influence neurodevelopment, and how a functional medicine approach can uncover the root causes behind symptoms.

It’s a reminder that when we connect the dots between environment, genetics, and inflammation, we open the door to hope and healing.

Leucovorin (folinic acid) can be life-changing for some children on the spectrum, but it’s not a standalone solution.

In functional medicine, we look at the full picture: how folate metabolism connects to oxidative stress, inflammation, methylation, and neurotransmitter balance.

Here’s why that matters:

✔ Folate doesn’t act alone, it depends on other nutrients like B2, B6, and B12 to do its job.

✔ If inflammation or oxidative stress is high, the body can’t use folate efficiently.

✔ Without addressing those layers first, even high doses of folinic acid can fall short or cause overstimulation.

Leucovorin works best when it’s part of a larger, supported plan, one that restores balance across the whole system.

Because functional medicine isn’t about finding one magic supplement.
It’s about finding the right combination that helps the body truly heal.

More on this coming soon.

Halloween candy is fun, until your immune system feels it.

High sugar intake can suppress immune activity for hours and feed gut imbalances that lead to fatigue, irritability, and inflammation.

You don’t need to detox, just rebalance:

✔ Start your day with protein and fiber
✔ Rehydrate + add electrolytes
✔ Support your microbiome with probiotics or fermented foods
✔ Prioritize sleep to regulate immune repair

Our Immune Support formula, with vitamin D, zinc, quercetin, and NAC, helps your body restore balance after a sugar surge.

Heard the buzz about peptides? Here’s what you should know ↴

Peptides are short chains of amino acids, natural messengers that tell your cells what to do next.

They help regulate inflammation, immune repair, energy metabolism, and tissue recovery.

Think of them as targeted signals that help the body communicate more efficiently.

In functional medicine, we use peptides like Thymosin Alpha-1 or BPC-157 to support immune balance, gut health, and cellular repair.

It’s an evolving, exciting field, and one we’ll be sharing more about soon.

October is both ADHD Awareness Month and Health Literacy Month, and together, they remind us that focus, mood, and motivation begin with biology.

ADHD isn’t just about attention.

It’s about how the brain makes and uses neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, processes shaped by nutrient balance, methylation, and genetics.

When we test beyond the surface, we often find low zinc, folate conversion issues, or sluggish methylation patterns that affect how the brain regulates focus and calm.

That’s why we created Attention Support, a formula with folinic acid (Leucovorin), zinc, magnesium, and active B-vitamins to support healthy neurotransmitter production.

As we age, the thymus makes fewer new T cells. This is immune aging.

When inputs are consistent → recovery improves, baseline inflammation drops, and infections feel less derailing.

When inputs slide → fatigue lingers and the “straw that breaks the camel’s back” shows up more often.

You can still move the needle. Walk daily, lift something light, eat protein and color, keep vitamin D optimized, and protect your bedtime.

At Neuronutrition, we pair lifestyle foundations with targeted nutrients to support immune balance through every decade.

📍 Not sure where to begin? Ask about checking vitamin D, ferritin, and homocysteine to understand your baseline.

When the gut is calm, the brain listens.

When the gut is inflamed or imbalanced, stress signals get louder.

This is the gut-brain axis in real life: the vagus nerve, neurotransmitters, hormones, and immune messengers constantly shaping mood, focus, and stress tolerance. In clinic, when we support the gut, we often see anxiety soften, sleep improve, and regulation return.

What we look for:
→ Dysbiosis and “leaky gut” that drive inflammation
→ Food reactions that irritate the nervous system
→ Nutrient gaps that block serotonin, dopamine, and GABA production
→ Chronic infections that keep the brain on high alert

What helps: steady protein and fiber, targeted probiotics and prebiotics, nervous-system support, and calming inflammation at its source. Small, consistent changes move the needle.

At neuronutrition, we evaluate nutrition, microbiome, and inflammation markers to build a plan that supports both gut and brain.
